Scarcity of petrol is causing inconvenience to the citizens in various cities of Punjab and Balochistan as various petrol pumps have announced unavailability of petroleum. According to details petrol scarcity has perturbed the citizens in various cities of Punjab including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala as a result consumers are facing severe shortage of petrol and long queues of consumers were witnessed at city petrol pumps.

Similarly petrol scarcity has also hit various cities of Balochistan including provincial capital Quetta, where some petrol pumps were selling petrol at the prices of Rs200 per liter. Concerned authorities were of the view that after Eid vacations they were not receiving the required supply of petrol that's why petrol scarcity has emerged in the city.

Is this what you just said to yourself after the Ramadhan got over ?

Eid is now over and we are busy meeting our family and relatives and giving them the Eid greetings.

But in doing so, how many of you bothered to pray the "zohar" (afternoon) salat ?

How many of us prayed Asr / Magrib / Esha ?

Hey "Esha" , but 'Taraweeh" is now over , isnt ?

Now who cares to go, we will just read it at home after this tv daily soap. We have truly missed so many episodes of our daily soap.

I truly need to catch up with the story.

Wait a sec my dear brothers (and sisters) , think.

During Ramadhan , why was it so easy to abstain from evil and do our salat on time ?

Was it we are only muslim during Ramadhan ?

Is it not because your good friend "Shaitaan" was not near you to fill your hearts with "waswas" that you could easily pray all 5 salat on time ?

Think ?

If you have indeed changed after the Ramadhan then you have truly "Welcomed Back The Shaitaan".

Hmmm,,, not me.

Why would anyone welcome the shaitaan and why would anyone call him a "good friend" when we all know it is he who would take us to hell ?

Now lets see and analyze for yourself.

Have you gone back to your old habbits ?

Backbitting , giving foul words , cheating , fighting ?

Do you now stare lustfully to other womens walking on the street.

Is watching Fashion TV and other haraam things back on your "sin list" ?

Do you now get angry everytime your mothers tells you something to do ?

And yes Salaats.

Asr : I am in office , cannot pray.

Magrib : I am driving home , inshallah I will pray once I reach home.

Esha : Yes I will surely pray after I finish my meal and watching tv.

Fajr , did not hear the alarm clock. Sorry + I will read once I get up for my office.

Do you know that its "good friend" (shaitaan) who sleeps next to you and ties knot around your head making it difficult for you to wake for fajr.

During Ramadhan, we prayed "tahajjud" salat during nights , now why does it appear like a huge task as if we are told to climb the mountain. Its because Shaitaan knows tahajjud is the time when Allah swt Himself says "is there anyone praying at this time of the hour, if yes I will answere his prayers" , so Shaitaan tricks us and makes our bed comfortable and cozy so that we will not leave the bed and pray.

During Ramadhan, we protected our eyes from committing zina by not looking at non-mehram ladies. Its was because of our will power and fear of Allah swt, we could achieve.

But now are you back to the old routine ? Doesnt that mean the fear of Allah swt has gone and you now trust your good friend (shaitaan)more ?

These are just few of the examples and if answer to even one of them is "true" then.. you have indeed Welcomed Back The Shaitaan.

Dont you know that on the Day of Judgement , it would be you who would be answerable to everything you did ?

That time your supposedly "good friend" (shaitaan) wont be standing next to you to answere your test ?

Choice is all yours... Either welcome your good friend (shaitaan) and stay and doom yourself in hellfire or Summit your will to Almight Allah swt and ask protection from Shaitaan.

All praise is due to Allah (SWT), the Cherisher and the Sustainer of the Universe. Peace and salutation be upon our beloved Prophet Mohammed (SAW) in abundance. It gives me great satisfaction to address you once again. This month of Ramadan has been a noteworthy one for us at the Al-Imdaad Foundation. Generally, Ramadan is a busy time for most Muslim humanitarian agencies across the Muslim world. This Ramadan in particular was a unique one in the sense that crucial relief operations had to be carried out in flood stricken Pakistan. The floods in Pakistan were truly devastating and the AIF team had to work assiduously in the month of Ramadan to make sure that your funds had reached the neediest of the flood victims.

Having being the first South African NGO to respond to the Pakistan Floods in late July, by providing tents and other much needed supplies to the region, the Al Imdaad Foundation then dispatched our second team to the district in order to conduct a thorough assessment of the present and future needs of the people in the country. During our stay in Pakistan, our team was able to airlift much needed emergency supplies to the cut off province of Punjab, on a C130 Hercules Military Cargo Aircraft, availed to us by the Pakistani government at no cost. A hands on approach has always been the system of any AIF Emergency Response and Alhumdulilah, with the blessing of Ramadan, a second distribution took place on the 30th of August in Azakehl, Nowshera and was attended by the South African Deputy High Commissioner and the City of Johannesburg Search and Rescue team. The Al Imdaad Team was able to identify people who had not received any aid and distribute much needed emergency aid to them. The distribution pack included tents, food, cooking utensils, clothing and fresh water.

Upon their return our team has been able to identify many target areas of concern. Whilst there is a constant need for emergency supplies, the most important need at the moment is the initiation of reconstruction and development. The devastating floods have caused widespread infrastructural damage and millions of people are now displaced. With the winter months approaching, many people find themselves without shelter and this has been flagged as a cause for concern. The Al Imdaad Foundation has already provided shelter for the people in the form of tents but their focus has now shifted to the building of semi permanent homes. Negotiations with suppliers have already been initiated and third team will soon be dispatched in order to finalise the building of these semi permanent homes. The Foundation is also looking into the possibility of sending a team of doctors as it has been identified that although there is an abundance of medical supplies, there is a shortage of medical personnel to administer these medicines to the people.

The time of Eid is a joyous occasion for all Muslims. The Al-lmdaad Foundation, it's trustees, staff, donors and recipients would like to wish you and your family a happy Eid Mubarak. We also extend our greetings of peace and happiness to our fellow citizens. May the joy of Eld remain with us always-EID MUBARAKI!!

When should a Muslim start fasting six days of Shawwaal ?

You can start fasting six days of Shawwaal from the second day of Shawwaal, because it is haraam to fast on the day of Eid.

You can fast the six days at any time during Shawwaal, although the best of good deeds are those which are done soonest.

The standing committee received the following question:

Should fasting the six days be done immediately after Ramadaan, following the day of Eid or is it permissible to do it a few days after Eid in the month of Shawwaal or not?

They replied as follows:

These days do not have to be fasted immediately after Eid al-Fitr; it is permissible to start fasting them one or more days after Eid, and they may be done consecutively or separately during the month of Shawwaal, according to what is easier for a person. There is plenty of room for maneuver in this matter, and this is not obligatory, it is Sunnah.

Can a person start fasting six days of Shawwaal when he still has days to make up from Ramadaan ?

If a person fasts six days of Shawwaal after Ramadaan when he has not yet completed the Ramadaan fast because he did not fast ten days of Ramadaan for a legitimate reason will he have the same reward as a person who fasted all of Ramadaan and followed it with six days of Shawwaal, i.e. will he be like a person who fasted for a lifetime? Please explain to us, may Allaah reward you with good.

The precise rewards for the deeds which people do for the sake of Allaah is something which is known only to Allaah. If a person seeks the reward from Allaah and strives to obey Him, his reward will not be lost, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"We shall not make the reward of anyone who does his (righteous) deeds in the most perfect manner to be lost."

[al-Kahf 18:30].

If someone has missed some of the days of Ramadaan, he should fast them first, then fast six days of Shawwaal, because he cannot follow the fast of Ramadaan with six days of Shawwaal unless he has completed his Ramadaan fast.

Should a woman start with making up missed fasts from Ramadaan or with the six days of Shawwaal ?

What should a woman do first: fast the six recommended days of Shawwal ( Alayam Alsetta Albeed) or fast equivalent to the days she missed in Ramadan due to her monthly period?

If she wants to earn the reward mentioned in the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him),

"Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime"

(reported by Muslim, no. 1984), then she should complete her Ramadaan fasts first, then follow it with six days of Shawwaal, so that the hadeeth with be applicable to her too, and she will gain the reward mentioned in it.

As regards the matter of permissibility, it is permissible for her to delay making up her Ramadaan fasts, provided that she makes them up before the next Ramadaan comes along.

The True Essence of Eid al-Fitr

In this day and age, many people eagerly await the end of Ramadan and the coming of Eid al-Fitr to gain their ‘freedom’ in order to go back to committing sin and disobeying Almighty Allah . Many people start on the day of Eid itself and engage in shameful and reprehensible behaviour in the name of celebration. We should remember that celebration does not mean committing sin, but rather it involves remembering Allah Ta’ala and being grateful to Allah Ta’ala for showering His Mercy and Bounties upon us. Let us look at the true essence and significance of Eid-ul-Fitr, and the way in which those pious servants close to Almighty Allah celebrated Eid.

Eid is a day of celebration for Muslims, a day of happiness. On this day, Muslims perform two rakaats of prayer, meet one another, shake hands and embrace and give charity to the poor and needy. Islam teaches protecting the poor, helping the helpless, and easing the pain and sufferings of orphans and the meek at every turn, and they should not be forgotten, especially on the day of Eid. That is why Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ordered us to pay the Sadqa-e-Fitr before performing the Eid Salaah so that Muslims remember their poor brothers on this occasion and include them in their happiness.

It is reported on the authority of Hadrat Anas (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) that when Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) came to Madina Shareef, the people of Madina would celebrate two festivals. They were asked what these days were and they replied, “We used to celebrate on these days in the days of ignorance.” Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Allah Ta’ala has granted you two better days than these days; Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.”

Regarding Eid-ul-Fitr, Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) once said, “When the month of Ramadaan is over, and the night of Eid-ul-Fitr has arrived, that night is called the Night of Prize. Then, in the early morning of Eid-ul-Fitr Allah Ta’ala will send His angels forth to visit all the towns and cities on the earth below. Once they have made their descent, they will position themselves at the entrances to all the streets and alleys. There, in a voice that is audible to every being created by Allah Ta’ala, apart from the jinn and humankind, they will issue a proclamation saying, “O Community of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), come forth into the presence of a Noble and Generous Lord, who will grant you gifts in abundance and forgive your terrible sin!” Then when the believers have emerged and presented themselves at their place of prayer, Allah Ta’ala will say to His angels, “O My angels, what is the recompense of the hired labourer, once he has done his job?” The angels will reply, “Our Lord and our Master, You will pay him his wages in full!” So Allah Ta’ala will say, “I now call upon you to bear witness, O My angels, that I have conferred My acceptance and My forgiveness as the reward for their fasting and night vigil during the month of Ramadaan.” Allah Ta’ala will then say, “O My servants put your requests to Me now, for this I swear by My Might and My Majesty, you will not ask Me this day, in this gathering of yours for anything connected with your life hereafter, without My granting it to you; nor for anything connected with your life in this lower world, without My attending to your need. By My Might and My Majesty, I will not put you to shame, nor will I expose you to disgrace amongst those who are faithfully committed to observing the laws (of Shariah). Now you may depart, knowing that you have been forgiven. You have won My approval, and I am well pleased with you.”” [Ghunyalit Taalibi Tareeqal Haq, Vol. 3]

SubHanALLAH! How Merciful is our Rabb, even though we are such wretched sinners.

Before the advent of Eid-ul-Fitr we need to ask ourselves, “Have we reflected on whether we have respected and honoured the month of Ramadaan as it should be respected and honoured? Have we worshipped in it as we should have?” The final night of Ramadaan is the night for collecting the rewards for all the goodness that was done throughout the month. If we are neglectful of Allah Ta’ala on this night, then our efforts of the whole month might be ruined and will go to waste. Therefore, read the following Hadith and try to spend the last night of Ramadaan remembering Allah Ta’ala and evaluating the deeds that have been performed during the month.

The excellence of remembering Allah Ta’ala on this night is reported in a Hadith in which Hadrat Abu Amamah (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) narrates that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The hearts of the people who stand in prayers on the night of Eid will not die on the day when all hearts will die.” In another narration, Hazrat Mu’az bin Jabal (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) reports that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated, “Paradise is compulsory (Wajib) for one who stays up and worships on five nights – the nights of the 8th, 9th and 10th of Zul Hijjah, the night of Eid-ul-Fitr, and the 15th night of Shabaan.” We can therefore understand the significance of the night of Eid from these Ahadith and we should try as much as possible to busy ourselves in the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala, even if it is for a portion of the night.

If we study the lives of the Companions and our pious predecessors we will see that even though they used to worship extensively in the month of Ramadaan, they would still feel regret and sorrow on the day of Eid. They were constantly worried about the fact of whether or not they had fulfilled the rights of Ramadaan, just as it is reported about Hazrat Umar (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) that on the day of Eid, he sat in a corner and cried so much that his blessed beard became soaked. When people asked the reason for this, he replied, “How can a person who does not know if his fasts have been accepted celebrate Eid?” That Hazrat Umar (Radiallahu Ta’ala ‘Anh) about whom Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said that his good deeds are equivalent to the number of stars in the sky, is crying upon reflecting as to whether his fasts have been accepted or not, whether he has obeyed the orders of Almighty Allah properly and if Allah Ta’ala is pleased with them. Allahu Akbar! And yet sinners like us are absolutely carefree and cannot wait to engage ourselves into sin again!

It was on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr that a man once entered the presence of Hadrat Ali (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) and found him eating coarse brown bread. “Today is the day of Eid, yet here you are, eating coarse brown bread!” the man exclaimed. So Hadrat Ali (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) replied to the visitor, saying, “Today is the day of Eid for someone whose fast has been accepted, whose effort has been deemed worthy, and whose sin has been forgiven. Today is Eid for us, and tomorrow is Eid for us. Every day in which we do not disobey Allah Ta’ala is an Eid for us.”

Commenting on this incident, Sayyiduna Ghawth al-Aa'zam Hazrat Shaykh Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) says that it is therefore important for every intelligent person to stop focusing on the external aspect, and not to let it capture his attention. His perspective on the day of Eid should be from the standpoint of contemplation and reflection.

Eid-ul-Fitr is not all about dressing up in fine new clothes, eating delicious treats and pursuing carnal pleasures and delights. In its outward celebration Eid-ul-Fitr is actually meant to symbolize the acceptance of acts of worshipful obedience; the remission of sins and mistakes; the conversion of bad deeds into good deeds; the glad tidings of promotion to higher spiritual degrees and the conferring of robes of honour, gifts and gracious favours. Eid should be celebrated, but together with celebrating it, Allah Ta’ala should also be remembered. Whether there is happiness or sadness, He should never be forgotten; just as Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, “The people who will be called towards Paradise first on the Day of Judgment are those who praised Allah Ta’ala during happiness and sadness.”

..:: The Blessed Sunnah to be Followed on Eid Day ::..

Lastly, on this joyous occasion we should try as much as possible to follow the beautiful Sunnah of our Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Some of the Sunnahs are listed below, and what better way could we spend our day of Eid, than following in the footsteps of our Beloved Aaqa (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam):

Cut the hair
Trim the nails
Have a bath (Ghusl)
Use a Miswaak
Wear nice clothes - if you have new clothes then wear new, otherwise nice clean clothes.
Wear an Amaama
Put on Itr (perfume without Alcohol)
Put Surma (Kohl)
Perform the morning prayer in the local Masjid
Go to the Eid Gah early
Pay the Sadqa-e-Fitr before the Eid Salaah
Walk to the Eid Gah and take a different route on the way back home.
Eat some dates before leaving home for the Eid Salaah (3, 5 or any amount that is an odd number). If there are no dates available, then you should eat anything sweet.
Express happiness, give lots of charity, go to the Eid Gah calmly, relaxed and dignified, with the gaze lowered.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq and Hidayat to celebrate Eid the way His pious servants celebrated it, and the Taufeeq to always stay away from sins, but especially during this Mubarak Day… Aameen!!

[PF:159156] Militants asked to surrender before Eid

Security forces in northwest Pakistan today asked wanted Taliban fighters in the Swat valley to surrender before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival or be prepared to face the consequences.

The security forces drew up a list of 19 wanted and absconding militants from Kanju sub-division of the restive Swat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and put it on display at conspicuous places in the region.

The militants were warned to surrender before Eid-ul-Fitr, which will be celebrated later this week. If they failed to do so, their homes would be demolished and legal proceedings initiated against them, the posters said.

The posters listing the wanted militants carried the signature of a top army official based in Swat.

Among the wanted militants named in the list are Yaqub Khan, Hussain Khan, Sajid Khan, Zafar Ali, Rehman Shah, Naseeb Rawan, Farman Ali and Yusaf Khan.

In the past too, security forces have issued lists of wanted militants and many of these rebels surrendered to the authorities in Swat.

The civilian government ordered the army to launch operations against the Taliban in Swat last year after militants violated a peace deal and extended their influence to two districts located just 100 from Islamabad.

The army has claimed it killed or captured hundreds of militants.

The writ of the government was non-existent in Swat after Taliban fighters led by radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah set up a parallel administration.

The militants executed dozens of people for violating their diktats. The army failed to capture most of the top militant leadership in Swat and Fazlullah fled to Afghanistan.

In all more than a million worshippers were in the mosque and surrounding areas, Said al-Mansoori, a spokesman for the commission governing Mecca and Medina said.

The two cities have swollen with worshippers from Saudi Arabia and around the world undertaking the umrah, or minor pilgrimage, which peaks during Ramadan.

The Muslim fasting month ends on September 9 with the holiday of Eid ul Fitr. The month's last Friday, the Muslim holy day, is considered especially blessed.

Saudi King Abdullah was in Mecca as well Friday to inaugurate a 187-million-dollar (145-million-euro) expansion of the Zamzam waterworks which serves up to worshippers the celebrated holy water from a spring beneath the city.

The new system can filter up to five million litres (1.3 million gallons) of Zamzam water per day.

Many overseas pilgrims take large jugs of Zamzam water, which Muslims consider holy, back home from Mecca.

What to do on Eid Day

1. It is Sunnah to dress in the best clothes on Eid. It was narrated that Ibn Umar used to do that along with other Companions of the Prophet [pbuh] . [Fath al-Baaree]

2. It is a must (Waajib) to pray Eid Prayer. The Prophet [pbuh] and his Companions never ceased doing it, and they even gathered the people for it including women who were having their menses, children and the elderly. [Bukhari and Muslim]

3. It is Sunnah to say Takbeer loudly when leaving our homes to go to Eid Prayer. The Prophet [pbuh] used to say this until he finished the Prayer. [Silsilat Al-ahadeeth As-Sahiha]

4. The Sunnah for Eid Prayers is to pray in the Musallah (that is in an uncovered place) and not in the Masjid. The Prophet [pbuh] never prayed Eid Prayer in the Masjid. Abu Sa'eed reported: "The Prophet used to go on the day of Eid -al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adhaa to the Musallah, and the first thing he did was to pray." [Bukhaari and Muslim]

5. Neither Adhaan nor Iqaamah are pronounced for Eid Prayer. [Muslim]

6. Ibn Abbaas reported: "The Prophet [pbuh] prayed two Rakaahs for the Eid prayer and did not pray before it or after it." [Bukhaari]

7. Jabir reported: "The Prophet [pbuh] used to come back from Eid-al-Fitr on a path other than the one used in going to it." [Bukhaari]

8. It is permitted to listen to songs (without musical instruments) on Eid day especially for children. [Bukhaari and Muslim]

What NOT to do on Eid Day

1. To shave the beards especially for Eid. The Prophet [pbuh] has ordered us not to shave our beards; so it is a shame that, on this great day of demonstrating our differences in ceremonies to those of the Mushriks, that some Muslim shaves his beard so that he looks "clean" like the Mushriks.

2. To imitate the Mushriks in their practices and dress, and to shake hands with women. The Prophet [pbuh] said: "It is better that a man is hit with needle on his head than to touch a woman who is not lawful for him." [Silsilat al-Ahadeeth as-Sahiha]

3. To listen to music on Eid. The Prophet [pbuh] said: "There will be some in my nation who will regard adultery, men dressing in silk, drinking intoxicants (al-Khamr), and musical instruments to be lawful." [Bukhaari, Abu Dawood and Bayhaqee]

4. For women not to wear Hijaab. To do so is to celebrate Eid while committing a major sin.

5. To visit the graveyard especially on Eid. It is permitted to visit the graveyard all year long so we should not make a special case out of it on Eid.

6. To waste money and being extravagant with food instead of giving them to the poor.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court Qazi Faez Isa has observed that militant organisations keep on thriving in Pakistan because there has never been easy access to justice.

"Terrorists' organisations have taken root in Pakistan…when nobody has access to justice in the country," said Justice Isa in a written letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan.

A three-page letter, a copy of which is with The Express Tribune, reads: "The looming debacle reminds Quaid-e-Azam's fears that the danger of denial of justice remained dominant over society because of religious disputes among various organisations in the state.

"I remind you (my lord) Quaid's words in which he (Quaid) pointed out religion, culture and civilisation fighting in Pakistan because there was a danger of denial of these human rights in the subcontinent," Justice Isa wrote.

He requested Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take notice of unruly laws prevailing in the country as the poor are struggling for justice from pillar to post but they have no access to justice.

He also feared a new judicial crisis when BHC will be virtually blanked after the completion of tenure of additional judges by September 5, 2010.

Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif also sought Supreme Court's advice in appointment of judges in superior courts. In their written letters, Justices Ejaz and Sharif also made similar requests.

On these requests Chief Justice of Supreme Court passed the following order:

"I am of the opinion that since the matter relating to procedure of appointment of judges is pending adjudication before the full bench. Therefore, on administrative side possibly no action can be taken thus letters be placed before the bench treating as civil miscellaneous application in miscellaneous petition."

Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq said: "I and President Supreme Court Bar Association will be appearing before the lager bench on Monday regarding (giving) extension to additional judges in the BHC."

It is also pertinent to mention here that some 32 additional judges will complete their terms after Eid.

To whom should zakaat al fitr be paid?

Zakaat al-fitr should be given to poor Muslims even if they are sinners so long as their sin is not something that puts them beyond the pale of Islam. What is meant by poor is those who appear to be poor, even if they are in fact rich. The one who is paying the zakaah should seek out good poor people as much as possible. If he finds out later that the one who took it was actually rich, that does not affect the one who gave it, rather he has discharged his duty, praise be to Allaah.

Can we zakaat al-fitr donate it to charitable funds for building a mosque,

Zakaat al-fitr should be given to the poor Muslims in the land or city where it is given, because of the report narrated by Abu Dawood from Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, to be paid in Ramadaan to feed the poor…" It is permissible to send it to the poor of another land whose people are in greater need.

It is NOT permissible to spend it on building a mosque or other charitable projects.

The rate of zakaat al-fitr

Is it permissible to give zakaat al-fitr in cash?

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr upon the Muslims at a rate of one saa of dates or one saa of barley, and he commanded that it should be given before the people went out to pray – i.e., the Eid prayers. In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "At the time of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) we used to give it at a rate of one saa of food, or one saa of dates, or one saa of barley, or one saa of cheese, or one saa of raisins…" A number of scholars interpreted the word taaam (food) in this hadeeth as referring to wheat, and others explained it as referring to the staple food of the local people, no matter what it is, whether it is wheat, corn or something else. This is the correct view, because the zakaah is a kind of help given by the rich to the poor, and the Muslim should not offer help with anything other than the staple food of his country.

What must be given is a saa of all kinds of food, which is four times the amount scooped up with two hands, which is approximately three kilograms. If the Muslim gives a saa of rice or some other staple food of his country, that is fine.

It first becomes due on the night of the twenty-eighth of Ramadaan, because the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to give it one or two days before Eid, and the month lasts twenty-nine or thirty days.

The latest it may be given is at the Eid prayer, but it is not permissible to delay it until after the prayer, because of the report narrated by Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is accepted zakaah, and whoever gives it after the prayer, it is a kind of charity." (Narrated by Abu Dawood).

It is not permissible to pay the value in money, according to the majority of scholars, and the evidence for this view is more sound. Rather it should be given in the form of food, as was done by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) and the majority of the ummah. We ask Allaah to help us and all the Muslims to understand His religion and adhere steadfastly to it. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.

Paying zakaat al-fitr on behalf of the dead

Zakaat al-fitr is obligatory for all Muslims, males and females, old and young, as stated by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

It is only required from the living who are present at the time when it becomes due.

The time when zakaat al-fitr becomes due is when the sun sets on the last day of Ramadaan, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called it sadaqat al-fitr, and fitr or breaking the fast of Ramadaan comes when the sun sets on the night of Eid (i.e., the night before Eid). It is a purification for the fasting person from any idle or obscene speech, and the fast ends when the sun sets.

If a person dies before the time it become obligatory, he does not have to pay this zakaah. If a person lives until the time when it becomes obligatory, then dies before paying it, then it should be paid on his behalf from his wealth because it is still a duty that he owes and becomes a debt that must be paid on his behalf.

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

If a person dies before the sun sets on the night before Eid, he does not have to pay zakaat al-fitr, because he died before it became obligatory.

In conclusion: The deceased person is responsible for this if he died after the time when it became obligatory, which is sunset on the night before Eid. In that case it must be paid on his behalf.

If he died before the time when it became obligatory – then this zakaah is not obligatory.

If someone gives charity such as food, money, etc dead person behalf, then it is charity given on his behalf and is not zakaat al-fitr.

It is proven in more than one hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that charity given on behalf of the dead benefits them and the reward reaches them.

The difference between zakaah on wealth and zakaat al-fitr

Yes, the zakaah that is one of the five pillars of Islam is something other than the zakaah that must be paid at the end of Ramadaan (zakaat al-fitr).

The former is zakaah on wealth which is only obligatory on certain kinds of wealth, viz.:

1- Anaam livestock (camels, cattle and sheep)

2- Gold and silver and, nowadays, paper currency

3- Trade goods

4- What is produced by the earth, which includes two things:

a. Crops and fruits. The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is obligatory to pay zakaah on four kinds: wheat, barley, dates and raisins; they differed with regard to other kinds.

b. Rikaaz (buried treasure), i.e., wealth of the kuffaar buried in the ground that is found by a Muslim.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated in Majmoo al-Fataawa (25/10) that Ibn al-Mundhir (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The scholars are unanimously agreed that zakaah is obligatory on nine things: camels, cattle, sheep, gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates and raisins, if they reach the nisaab (minimum threshold) for each type at which zakaah becomes due. They differed with regard to other types of wealth.

Zakaah for each of these kinds of wealth is obligatory subject to certain conditions, and a specific amount of the wealth must be given as defined by shareeah.

This zakaah (zakaah on wealth) is one of the five pillars of Islam. Whoever denies it is a kaafir and whoever withholds it is a rebellious evildoer; the Muslim ruler must take it from him by force. If he persists in withholding it and is protected by his tribe then he must be fought until he pays it.

Al-Bukhaari (8) and Muslim (12) narrated that Abd-Allaah ibn Umar said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: "Islam is built on five (pillars): bearing witness that there is no God except Allaah, establishing regular prayer, paying zakaah, fasting Ramadaan and going on Pilgrimage to the House."

Al-Bukhaari (25) and Muslim (22) narrated from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "I have been enjoined to fight the people until they bear witness that there is no god except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, and they establish regular prayer and pay zakaah. If they do that, then they have protected their blood and wealth from me except in cases where Islamic laws apply, and their reckoning will be with Allaah.

The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) were unanimously agreed on fighting those who withheld zakaah. Al-Bukhaari (1400) and Muslim (20) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

"When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed away, and Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) became caliph, and some of the Arabs disbelieved and apostatized, Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: How could you fight the people, when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "I have been enjoined to fight the people until they bear witness that there is no god except Allaah. Whoever says that has protected his blood and wealth from me except in cases where Islamic laws apply, and their reckoning will be with Allaah"?

Then Abu Bakr said: By Allaah, I will fight those who separate prayer and zakaah, for zakaah is what is due on wealth. By Allaah, if they withhold from me a small sheep that they used to give to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), I will fight them for withholding it.

Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: 'By Allaah, when I realized that Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) was confident about this idea, then I knew that this was the truth.'"

With regard to the zakaah that is obligatory at the end of Ramadaan, this is Zakaat al-Fitr. The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is obligatory, except those who held odd views.

It is less important than the zakaah of wealth with regard to obligation and status. Zakaat al-Fitr is NOT one of the pillars of Islam, and the one who denies it is not a kaafir.

Zakaat al-Fitr was mentioned in many ahaadeeth, such as the following:

Al-Bukhaari (1503) and Muslim (984) narrated that Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, a saa of dates, or a saa of barley, for every Muslim, slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he enjoined that it be given before the people go out to the prayer.

Abu Dawood (1609) narrated that Ibn Abbaas said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr as a purification for those who fasted from idle or obscene talk, and so as to feed the poor. Whoever gives it before the prayer, it is accepted zakaah and whoever gives it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity. Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

Ruling on one who does not pay zakaat al-fitr

although he is able to

The one who does not pay zakaat al-fitr has to repent to Allaah and seek His forgiveness, because he is sinning by withholding it. He also has to pay it to those who are entitled to it, but after Eid prayer it is simply regarded as ordinary charity.

Is zakaat al-fitr due from one who did not fast in Ramadaan

because of a valid excuse like travelling or sick ?

The majority of scholars, including the four imams and others, are of the view that zakaat al-fitr is due from the Muslim even if he did not fast Ramadaan. No one else differed from that except Saeed ibn al-Musayyab and al-Hasan al-Basri, who said that zakaat al-fitr is due only from those who fasted.

But the correct view is that of the majority, because of the following evidence:

1 –The general meaning of the hadeeth which is the basis for zakaat al-fitr being obligatory:

It was narrated that Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, a saa of dates or a saa of barley, upon everyone, slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he enjoined that it be paid before the people went out to pray. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1503) and Muslim (984).

The word "young" includes small children who cannot fast.

2 – When charity and zakaah are enjoined, it is usually to help the poor and needy, and is aimed at achieving some degree of social security, and the most obvious case is zakaat al-fitr, which is enjoined upon young and old, free and slave, male and female, and the Lawgiver did not stipulate any minimum threshold (nisaab) or the passage of one year for it to be obligatory. Hence the fact that it is obligatory for those who did not fast in Ramadaan, with or without an excuse, is implied in the purpose for which this zakaah is prescribed.

3 – With regard to the argument of those who quoted as evidence the words of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscene speech, and to feed the poor. Narrated by Abu Dawood (1609)

They said: The words "as a purification for the fasting person" means that zakaat al-fitr is obligatory only for those who fasted. Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar responded to that in al-Fath (3/369) where he said:

My response is that mentioning purification refers to the usual case (as most people fast), just as it is also required of those who did not commit sin, such as one who is very righteous or one who became Muslim a moment before the sun set. End quote.

What this means is that in most cases zakaat al-fitr is prescribed because it is a purification for the one who fasted, but attaining this purification is not a condition of it being obligatory. A similar case is the zakaah of one's wealth, which has also been prescribed in order to purify the soul:

"Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allaah for them. Verily, your invocations are a source of security for them; and Allaah is All-Hearer, All-Knower"

[al-Tawbah 9:103]

Despite that zakaah is obligatory in the case of wealth belonging to a small child who does not need to be purified, because no bad deeds are recorded for him.

Shaykh Ibn Jibreen gave another response, and said:

It is paid on behalf of children and those who are not accountable, and those who did not fast because of an excuse such as sickness or travel. So the purification is for the guardians of those who are not accountable, and it is a purification for the one who did not fast because of an excuse, on the assumption that he will fast once the excuse is no longer in effect, so it is purification in advance, before he fasts or completes his fast. End quote.

Where to pay zakaat al-fitr

I am a young man living in Kuwait, but I have taken my daughter to America for medical treatment and I fasted Ramadaan in America. Do I have to pay zakaat al-fitr in America or can I delegate my family in Kuwait to pay it on my behalf? What is the ruling on paying zakaat al-fitr in cash? Please note that in America they pay it in cash instead of giving staple food.

The scholars (may Allaah be pleased with them) stated that zakaat al-fitr is connected to numbers of people, not money, and it is to be paid in the place where a person is on the night before Eid.

Ibn Qudaamah said in al-Mughni (4/134):

As for zakaat al-fitr, it is to be paid in the land where the person from whom it is due is present, whether his wealth is there or not. End quote.

As for paying zakaat al-fitr in cash, please note that it must be given in the form of food, and that paying it in cash is NOT acceptable.

So you must try to give it in the form of food. If the poor person refuses the food and asks for cash, then there is nothing wrong with your giving it as cash in that case, because of need or necessity.

Should zakaat al-fitr be given to one person, or distributed among several?

It is permissible to give zakaat al-fitr on behalf of one person to one person, and it is also permissible to distribute it among a number of people.

Is there a duaa to be said when paying zakaat al-fitr?

We do not know of any specific duaa to be said when paying it.

Ruling on zakaat al-fitr and how much is to be paid

Sadaqat al-fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim who is self-supporting, if he has one saa or more than he needs of food for himself and his family on the day and night of Eid.

The basis for that is the report narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined zakaat al-fitr, a saa of dates, or a saa of barley, upon all the Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and he commanded that it be paid before the people went out to pray." Agreed upon; this version was narrated by al-Bukhaari.

And Abu Saeed al-Khudri narrated: "We used to pay zakaat al-fitr when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was alive, a saa' of food or a saa' of dates or a saa' of barley or a saa' of raisins or a saa' of dried yoghurt." Agreed upon.

It is acceptable to give a saa of the local staple food such as rice etc.

What is meant by a saa' here is the saa of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), which is four times the amount that may be held in the two hands of a man of average build. If a person does not pay zakaat al-fitr, he is sinning, and he has to make it up.

There is no such thing as marking Ramzaan for giving away Zakat. It is to be given the moment we posses enough assets that makes it mandatory upon us to pay Zakat. Delaying it further is not recommended.

Recommendation by Scholars :

Every year ; end of Ramzaan we can calculate approximately how much we are supposed to give in Zakat and then divide this amount by 12 and keep giving it every single month to those who fall under any of the category mentioned in Quran and email below. If poor people know they are going to get specific extra amount every month then they can make adjustments and spend on things like education / food etc etc and this will help them a great deal.

There is another common mis-conception that 2.5% of the asset value is all that we are to give. Whereas 2.5% is the lowest limit which if not paid then we will go out of the folds of Islam and there is no specific upper limit set.For example if I have 10 lakh INR as my assets then my annual Zakat is going to be only 25000 "(25 thousand). Now considering the poverty and cost of living around us how many people will get significantly affected by this 25000 per annum?

We are rewarded based on intention and not by actions. We are not supposed to restrict Allah's mercy and bounties to a specific place / month. If Allah wills we will be rewarded as much in months other than Ramzaan for paying Zakat regularly to those who need it the most ;Amen.

Please encourage everyone to be regular in what they give and give with the intention of making difference in the life of those who receive it and not for the sake of formality. Insha Allah it will make a difference.

Ramzan is considered holiest month of the Islamic calendar. We do not miss any chance to hit out at the government for poor condition of Muslims in India. But when it comes to playing our part we fail miserably. As per Arjun Sengupta Committee 2008 report, 77% of Indian population is surviving on Rs 600 per month. Same report also mentions that 84.7% of Muslim population is in poor and vulnerable group.

Giving

In Western countries, charity and philanthropy is way of life for both governments and individuals. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the countries giving the highest amounts of charity money are USA- $28.67 billion, France- $12.43 billion, Germany- $11.98 billion, UK- $11.50 billion and Japan - $9.48 billion. The Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) July 2010 report also lists countries ranked by generosity as donation per citizen from data collected in 2008 are Luxembourg- $114/citizen, Norway - $96/citizen, Sweden- $66/citizen,Ireland- $66/citizen and Kuwait- $33/citizen. Same report also mentions that in terms of Humanitarian aid Saudi Arabia - 51.8 million tops the list, followed by United Arab Emirates- 35.3 million, Kuwait- 34.2 million, Russia- 32.5 million and India -14.6 million.

Recently, Buffett and Gates started a drive called "The Giving Pledge" to encourage high-profile philanthropic promises. Warren Buffet has pledged to donate 99 per cent of his wealth, while Bill and Melinda Gates have already donated half of theirs to charity, using it for improving the health of humanity. Indians are crowding the list of Forbes but when it comes to be generous they are no match for likes of Buffet. Recently, Karnataka's minister for tourism and leading industrialist Gali Janardhan Reddy presented a diamond-studded gold crown, estimated to be worth Rs 450 million (Rs 45 crore), to the famous Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirupati.

Capgemini and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in their report stated that India's high net worth individuals (HNWIs), who are defined as those having investable assets of $1 million or more, are over 120,000 in number, or 0.01% of the population, their combined worth is close to one-third of India's Gross National Income (GNI).

It would take an average urban Indian at least 2,238 years, based on the monthly per capita expenditure estimates in the 2007-8 National Sample Survey, to achieve a net worth equal to that of the average HNWI.

As per reports, In India only 10 percent of charitable giving comes from individuals and corporate sector, in sharp contrast to the United States, where 75 percent is from individuals and corporations. It is astonishing that Indian rich living so close to poverty are still very reluctant to loose their purse-string for charity. A survey in USA brought the interesting facts out that the poorest fifth of U.S. households contributed an average of 4.3 percent of their incomes to charitable organizations in 2007. The richest fifth gave at less than half that rate, 2.1 percent.

Charity in Islam

Zakat, which was made mandatory in Makkah at the same time as Salat (prayers) requires, every year 2.5% of one's wealth is given away to the poor and needy. The requirement of Zakat payment stops upon death of an individual. The act of giving Zakat means purifying one's wealth to gain Allah's blessing to make it grow in goodness and themselves from their greed and selfishness. In addition, Zakat purifies the person who receives it because it saves him from the humiliation of begging and prevents him from envying the rich.

Wealth is a blessing from their creator as long as it is acquired by halal means and the person fulfills all his responsibilities towards Allah and society. Islam sees poverty as a social anomaly that is to be removed and alleviated. To protect the self respect of poor Allah (S.W.T) has declared that Zakat is the "right" of poor in wealth of rich.

Islam has attached so much importance to Zakat that it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Anyone who does not believe on any of these five pillars of Islam cannot be categorized as Muslim. Quran has many surahs highlighting importance of Zakat and charity.

" And perform Salat and give Zakat " (Al Baqrah 43)

"So establish regular prayers; and give regular Charity; and obey the Messenger; That ye may receive mercy." (An-Nur : 56)

"By no means shall you attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that which you love; and whatever you give, Allah knows it well." ( Al Imran, 92).

In spite of Quran laying equal emphasis on Salat and Zakat, people tend to miss out on Zakat. Many give justification that since they are paying income taxes, they do not need to pay Zakat. Islam has given us a system of Zakat, where poor can be benefited directly. Zakat money most of times reaches to deserving poor and institutions. In comparison, Government with all its might and official machinery only manages to deliver 5-10 paise out of 100 paise to intended group.

In India many institutions are surviving solely on Zakat money. Madrasa and Orphanage do aggressive Zakat collection in the month of Ramzan. Their all annual budget just depends on Zakat. In this month, Allah promises to multiply every good deed with 70. Many poor look forward to Zakat in the month of Ramzan. They pin their hope and future planning for their medical need, wedding or education on Zakat money.

Very few who try to by-pass the Zakat with their weird logic should be beware. Hazrat Ali and Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "When Zakat is looked upon as a penalty (i.e., people will pay Zakat with a heavy heart, as though it is a penalty), then look for violent windstorms, earthquakes, men being swallowed by the earth, metamorphosis, stones being pelted from the skies, and calamities following one another in rapid succession, like beads of rosary falling one after the other when its string is cut."

The Prophet (PBUH) also said, "The nation that withholds Zakat (i.e. does not pay it), Allah afflicts famine on them."

Allah (SWT) promises to increase the wealth of every Zakat payee at the same time denouncing the wealth with interest. Zakat means grow (in goodness) or 'increase', 'purifying' or 'making pure'.

" Allah destroys wealth obtained from interest and will give increase for the deed of charity" (Al Baqrah: 276)

It is also stated in the Hadith that Zakat brings benefits such as gaining of the pleasure of Allah, increase in wealth, protection from losses, a cause thus established for Allah's forgiveness and blessings are obtained, Safety from calamities, protection from the wrath of Allah and from a bad death, the Zakaat will provide a shelter on the Day of Judgment, security from seventy misfortunes, it will serve as a shield from the fires of Jahannam, it contributes to Barkat in wealth and it also saves from fear and grief.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Indeed, an ignorant man who is generous is dearer to God than a worshiper who is miserly."

Zakat is obligatory on the Muslim who has reached puberty, who is sane, who is free, and who owns at least 52.5 tola silver or 7.5 tola gold or cash or business goods equal to it. The day, on which one will own the above mentioned amount, it is wajib on him to pay 2.5% as zakah after passing of one complete year.

"Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of God; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by God, and God is full of knowledge and wisdom." (9:60).

Quran has clearly identified the criteria of the recipients of zakat in the verse above. They are as follow:

1. Poor (i.e., destitute, beggars).

2. Needy (those who have needs but embarrassed to beg from people).

3. People employed to administer the Zakat funds.

4. People who have converted to Islam and in financial difficulty.

5. Enslaved people seeking freedom (could also mean Muslims in prison).

6. People in debt (to help a person in debt to come out of it).

7. Muslims who are struggling in Allah's cause.

8. Wayfarer (a traveler who is in need to complete his or her travel).

In the world where rich are getting richer and poor getting poorer. This disparity has lead to social tension among classes and rise in crime. Islam has provided us a system of Zakat, where this disparity can be reduced. This also helps removing ill feeling against rich from poor heart. It also helps in maintaining social peace. Let's fulfill our religious-social obligation and play a part in upliftment of the community.

Ramzan is considered holiest month of the Islamic calendar. Ramzan transforms even non-practicing to perform all the religious rituals, pray for guidance, refrain from everyday evils, self restraint and seek forgiveness for past sins. Ramzan is also a time when we focus on self-reformation, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment. People enthusiasm toward religious activity is unmatched during Ramzan. But same zeal is not visible while paying Zakat, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.

We do not miss any chance to hit out at the government for poor condition of Muslims in India. But when it comes to playing our part we fail miserably. As per Arjun Sengupta Committee 2008 report, 77% of Indian population is surviving on Rs 600 per month. Same report also mentions that 84.7% of Muslim population is in poor and vulnerable group.

Giving

In Western countries, charity and philanthropy is way of life for both governments and individuals. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the countries giving the highest amounts of charity money are USA- $28.67 billion, France- $12.43 billion, Germany- $11.98 billion, UK- $11.50 billion and Japan - $9.48 billion. The Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) July 2010 report also lists countries ranked by generosity as donation per citizen from data collected in 2008 are Luxembourg- $114/citizen, Norway - $96/citizen, Sweden- $66/citizen,Ireland- $66/citizen and Kuwait- $33/citizen. Same report also mentions that in terms of Humanitarian aid Saudi Arabia - 51.8 million tops the list, followed by United Arab Emirates- 35.3 million, Kuwait- 34.2 million, Russia- 32.5 million and India -14.6 million.

Recently, Buffett and Gates started a drive called "The Giving Pledge" to encourage high-profile philanthropic promises. Warren Buffet has pledged to donate 99 per cent of his wealth, while Bill and Melinda Gates have already donated half of theirs to charity, using it for improving the health of humanity. Indians are crowding the list of Forbes but when it comes to be generous they are no match for likes of Buffet. Recently, Karnataka's minister for tourism and leading industrialist Gali Janardhan Reddy presented a diamond-studded gold crown, estimated to be worth Rs 450 million (Rs 45 crore), to the famous Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirupati.

Capgemini and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in their report stated that India's high net worth individuals (HNWIs), who are defined as those having investable assets of $1 million or more, are over 120,000 in number, or 0.01% of the population, their combined worth is close to one-third of India's Gross National Income (GNI).

It would take an average urban Indian at least 2,238 years, based on the monthly per capita expenditure estimates in the 2007-8 National Sample Survey, to achieve a net worth equal to that of the average HNWI.

As per reports, In India only 10 percent of charitable giving comes from individuals and corporate sector, in sharp contrast to the United States, where 75 percent is from individuals and corporations. It is astonishing that Indian rich living so close to poverty are still very reluctant to loose their purse-string for charity. A survey in USA brought the interesting facts out that the poorest fifth of U.S. households contributed an average of 4.3 percent of their incomes to charitable organizations in 2007. The richest fifth gave at less than half that rate, 2.1 percent.

Charity in Islam

Zakat, which was made mandatory in Makkah at the same time as Salat (prayers) requires, every year 2.5% of one's wealth is given away to the poor and needy. The requirement of Zakat payment stops upon death of an individual. The act of giving Zakat means purifying one's wealth to gain Allah's blessing to make it grow in goodness and themselves from their greed and selfishness. In addition, Zakat purifies the person who receives it because it saves him from the humiliation of begging and prevents him from envying the rich.

Wealth is a blessing from their creator as long as it is acquired by halal means and the person fulfills all his responsibilities towards Allah and society. Islam sees poverty as a social anomaly that is to be removed and alleviated. To protect the self respect of poor Allah (S.W.T) has declared that Zakat is the "right" of poor in wealth of rich.

Islam has attached so much importance to Zakat that it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Anyone who does not believe on any of these five pillars of Islam cannot be categorized as Muslim. Quran has many surahs highlighting importance of Zakat and charity.

" And perform Salat and give Zakat " (Al Baqrah 43)

"So establish regular prayers; and give regular Charity; and obey the Messenger; That ye may receive mercy." (An-Nur : 56)

"By no means shall you attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that which you love; and whatever you give, Allah knows it well." ( Al Imran, 92).

In spite of Quran laying equal emphasis on Salat and Zakat, people tend to miss out on Zakat. Many give justification that since they are paying income taxes, they do not need to pay Zakat. Islam has given us a system of Zakat, where poor can be benefited directly. Zakat money most of times reaches to deserving poor and institutions. In comparison, Government with all its might and official machinery only manages to deliver 5-10 paise out of 100 paise to intended group.

In India many institutions are surviving solely on Zakat money. Madrasa and Orphanage do aggressive Zakat collection in the month of Ramzan. Their all annual budget just depends on Zakat. In this month, Allah promises to multiply every good deed with 70. Many poor look forward to Zakat in the month of Ramzan. They pin their hope and future planning for their medical need, wedding or education on Zakat money.

Very few who try to by-pass the Zakat with their weird logic should be beware. Hazrat Ali and Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) reports that the Prophet (PBUH) said, "When Zakat is looked upon as a penalty (i.e., people will pay Zakat with a heavy heart, as though it is a penalty), then look for violent windstorms, earthquakes, men being swallowed by the earth, metamorphosis, stones being pelted from the skies, and calamities following one another in rapid succession, like beads of rosary falling one after the other when its string is cut."

The Prophet (PBUH) also said, "The nation that withholds Zakat (i.e. does not pay it), Allah afflicts famine on them."

Allah (SWT) promises to increase the wealth of every Zakat payee at the same time denouncing the wealth with interest. Zakat means grow (in goodness) or 'increase', 'purifying' or 'making pure'.

" Allah destroys wealth obtained from interest and will give increase for the deed of charity" (Al Baqrah: 276)

It is also stated in the Hadith that Zakat brings benefits such as gaining of the pleasure of Allah, increase in wealth, protection from losses, a cause thus established for Allah's forgiveness and blessings are obtained, Safety from calamities, protection from the wrath of Allah and from a bad death, the Zakaat will provide a shelter on the Day of Judgment, security from seventy misfortunes, it will serve as a shield from the fires of Jahannam, it contributes to Barkat in wealth and it also saves from fear and grief.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Indeed, an ignorant man who is generous is dearer to God than a worshiper who is miserly."

Zakat is obligatory on the Muslim who has reached puberty, who is sane, who is free, and who owns at least 52.5 tola silver or 7.5 tola gold or cash or business goods equal to it. The day, on which one will own the above mentioned amount, it is wajib on him to pay 2.5% as zakah after passing of one complete year.

"Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of God; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by God, and God is full of knowledge and wisdom." (9:60).

Quran has clearly identified the criteria of the recipients of zakat in the verse above. They are as follow:

1. Poor (i.e., destitute, beggars).

2. Needy (those who have needs but embarrassed to beg from people).

3. People employed to administer the Zakat funds.

4. People who have converted to Islam and in financial difficulty.

5. Enslaved people seeking freedom (could also mean Muslims in prison).

6. People in debt (to help a person in debt to come out of it).

7. Muslims who are struggling in Allah's cause.

8. Wayfarer (a traveler who is in need to complete his or her travel).

In the world where rich are getting richer and poor getting poorer. This disparity has lead to social tension among classes and rise in crime. Islam has provided us a system of Zakat, where this disparity can be reduced. This also helps removing ill feeling against rich from poor heart. It also helps in maintaining social peace. Let's fulfill our religious-social obligation and play a part in upliftment of the community.

[PF:158865] Seeking Laylatul Qadr

In the name of Allaah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate

Seeking Laylatul Qadr

This is known as the Night of Decree. It has a special merit and is described in the Quraan as follows:

1. 1,000 Months

"Verily! We have sent it (this Quraan) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree), And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is? The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] by Allahs Permission with all Decrees, Peace! (All that night, there is Peace and Goodness from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn." (Al-Qadr 97:1 - 5)

Therefore, worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months! Which is about 83 years and 4 months! This is probably longer then most of us will even live! So which of us will be crazy enough to waste this opportunity?

2. Quraan Revealed and Decrees sent down

"We sent it (this Quraan) down on a blessed night. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quraan or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower." (Ad-Dukhan 44:6)

How blessed must the night, the Quraan was sent down, be?

There are two things perhaps its worth pointing out though. We all known that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given the Quraan is segments:

"And those who disbelieve say: "Why is not the Quran revealed to him all at once?" Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages. (It was revealed to the Prophet SAW in 23 years.)." (Al-Furqan 25:32)

"And (it is) a Quraan which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages. (in 23 years)." (Al-Isra 17:106)

So if that the case, how could the Quraan have been revealed during Laylatul Qadr?

Muslims also believe in something known as the al – Lawh ul – Mahfooz (the Preserved Tablet). In this, Allaah recorded everything that was going to happen in the future, Since Allaah has infinite knowledge and well aware of our future actions. This same books has all the decrees and is described in the following narration:

Narrated Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard Allahs Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: "Allah ordained the measures (of quality) of the creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, as His Throne was upon water." [Saheeh Muslim, Book 033, Number 6416]

And it is Narrated Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit said, "O my little son, you will never find the taste of Eemaans reality until you know that whatever caught you would not have missed you and what missed you would never have caught you.

I heard Allaahs Messenger say: "Indeed the first thing which Allaah created was the pen and He told it to write.

It asked: O my Lord, what should I write?

Allah said: Write the destiny of everything until the Final Hour comes."

O my little son! I heard Allaahs Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "Whoever dies believing in other than this is not a true follower of mine." [Sunan Aboo Daawood, vol. 3, p. 1317, Number 4683 and authenticated by Sheikh al-Albaanee in Sharh al - Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah, p. 264 and in as-Silsilah, vol. 1, no. 207]

Therefore, when people say it was written in your Destinty, they are referring to the above book.

So on laylatul qadr, the Quraan was revealed from this book.

When is the Night?

Narrated Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her): Allahs Apostle (peace be upon him) said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 3, Book 32, Number 234]

Therefore, it could be 21^st, 23^rd, 25^th, 27^th or 29^th. Some narrations indicate its on the last seven days and others say 27^th. However, its best to seek it on all the odd nights (only 5 days!) and perhaps you will be rewarded for a lifetime!

One thing to note, we start our nights at maghrib. So, if today is the 20^th fast. However, the prayer of tonite is the 21^st. If you recall, we startd taraweeh the night before fasting. Also, when the moon is sighted at the end, we dont pray taraweeh the night before Eid.

How should one approach and benefit from this night?

1. Stand in Qiyaam

Qiyaam means standing and Qiyaam ul layl means standing at night. Its basically the night prayer and has other names such as: tahajjud, taraweeh, etc.

Narrated Aboo Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 3, Book 32, Number 231]

Ideally, you should go and pray Taraweeh in the Mosque and complete the prayer with the Imaam, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever stand in prayer with the Imaam until he (the Imaam) concludes the prayer, it is recorded for him that he prayer the whole night." [Sunan Aboo Daawood, Sunan at – Tirmithee and others. Its chain of narrations is authentic. See Irwaa ul – Ghaleel, Number 447]

However, if you are unable to, then pray it at home.

Remember, make sure that you have made wudoo correctly, your clothes are clean, the area you are praying is clean and that you pray in a moderate pace and recite correctly. Its ok if you cant recite big soorahs, its the intentions that counts.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended."

Just recite Soorah fatiha, then your other Soorah, then after that, raise your hands and read those duas. Once you are done, go into rukoo and complete your prayer.

4. Make Dua

There was a sheikh who said when he was 12, he thought to himself, if Allaah will give us anything on this night, what are the main things I really wish for. He made a list of about 6 and asked for them every night (in the last ten days). He said 2 years later he had memorized the Quraan

So similarly, Look into your lives and see what it is you need to make them complete. Make your list, then after your Witr prayer, raise your hands up and ask Allaah, from the bottom of your heart, what it is you want. Also, cry if you can, and if you cant, then make yourself cry. I know it sounds strange, but once you break that shell around your heart, you will become more sincere.

Also, its Sunnah to say the following Dua:

"Allahumma innaka
afuwwun tuh ibbul afwa
fa fu annee -

O Allah! You are forgiving,
and you love forgiveness.
So forgive me."

Remember, ask for whatever you wish, but dont forget to say for forgiveness, because the last place we all want to end up is in Hell…

Just incase you'r not sure what to ask for:

· Forgives for yourself, your family and the who muslim nation (ummah)

· Guidance to the straight path

· Purification of mind, body and soul

· Knowledge of the religion

· Wisdom

· The best of the world and the next

· A righteous spouse

· Paradise

· Etc etc

Dont ask for things like long life, more money, etc because all of this has already been apportioned for you and it cannot be changed.

As for those of who you may not be able to pray, you should recite Quraan instead. Quraan can be recited in any state, according to the strongest opinion (according to Dr. Bilal and others scholars), so dont follow the views of those who dont know! Allaah would not restrict the Quraan to certian people and certain times only!! So recite Quraan, perhaps recite a soorah that you love and read its translation. Or you can read other stuff like islamic articles, or some of the stories of the Prophets, or even ahadeeth. The point is to do something good. and after that, make your Dua sincerely.

And Finally, be consistent. Its only 5 nights, dont waste them. Repeat the same thing every night. Anyone and everyone who trys to distract you in these nights, are no doubt soldiers of shaytaan. Any friends who ask you to go out on this night, are the ones that will lead you to Hell. So take heed of your actions and Fear Allaah in all you do…

Remember..this might be your last Ramadaan…The last thing you want is to be in your grave, regretting not being a better Muslim in this life…Once you die, your judgment starts and there is no returning back!

The old calligraphy master is able to right just as beautifully whether he ¢â' '¹s holding his brushes in his hands, feet, mouth, nose, or even strapped on his back.

Haj Pilgrimage in 1953 - Rare Pictures

The pilgrimage is associated with the life of Muhammad, but the ritual of the Hajj itself was considered ancient even during his lifetime in the 7th century. Many Muslims believe that it goes back to the time of Abraham in 2000 BC. Pilgrims would join processions of tens of thousands of people, who would simultaneously converge on Mecca for the week of the Hajj, and perform a series of rituals. Each person would walk counter-clockwise seven times about the Kaaba, the cubical building towards which all Muslims pray, kiss the sacred Black Stone on its corner, run back and forth between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, drink from the Zamzam Well, go to the plains of Mount Arafat to stand in vigil, then proceed to Muzdalifah to gather pebbles, which they would throw at a rock in Mina to perform the ritual of the Stoning of the Devil. The pilgrims would then shave their heads, perform an animal sacrifice, and celebrate the three day global festival of Eid

Many believe that women
and big politics are not compatible, but history shows that this is not true. ¦ We present you a brief overview of
the most important female figures in Policy 20 and 21 centuries from the online
version of the magazine TIME.

Indira Gandhi, India.

She was a true
daughter of the country, brought up and his people and his father, who
was the first Prime Minister of India after years of British rule. Cover
of TIME magazine soon after its election in January of 1966 reads: "The
poor of India in women's hands." These hand held India in the next
decades through many tests: an economic downturn, famine, India's first
test of an atomic bomb, civil war in neighboring Pakistan, and education
(with Indira), a new state - Bangaladesh.

Margaret Thatcher, United Kingdom.

Also known Iron Lady,
Margaret Thatcher was a woman of high principles, short patience and a
fan of whiskey. A housewife from the outskirts into one of the most
influential women in the world, and ruled the country from 1979 to 1990,
Thatcher became the first woman prime minister in Europe, and the first
British permerom, elected for three consecutive terms. During his 11
years in power it has increased the share of private capital and led to
the grave the Soviet Union. Thatcher is as for their personal qualities,
and for the achievements in the state field, the most popular British
politician after Winston Churchill.

Shirimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lanka.

Fifty years ago
Shirimavo Bandaranaike became the first woman in the foreseeable
history - the head of government. Her victory is so overwhelmed by all
that no one knew how to correctly call. "We need to invent a new word" -
wrote the London Evening News the next day after Shirimavo elected
Prime Minister of Ceylon (then called Sri Lanka). "What's her name? -
Regent? "Bandaranaike led the party after the death of her husband, who
was slain by a Buddhist monk in 1959 after winning her party in 1960,
she took the reins in his hands and rules until 1965. After that she
became prime minister twice - from 1970 to 1977 and from 1994 to 2000.
Her daughter was the first-ever woman president in 1994, she appointed
her mother prime minister for the last time (it should be noted that
this appointment was rather a tribute of respect). Shirimavo resigned in
April 2000 and died in the same year.

Corazon Aquino, Philippines

After the death
of her charismatic husband, pious Catholic widow Corazon Aquino won the
people's love and overthrew the dictatorial regime, who was involved in
the murder of her husband. Millions of people took to the streets, and
in February 1986 Aquino became president. After crushing the attempts of
several military coups, Aquino saved democracy in the country -
something for which killed her husband. In 1986, Corazon Aquino, was
named "Man of the Year" by magazine TIME - the first woman after the
Queen Elizabeth 2, has suffered such an honor.

Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan.

Descendant of
an influential Pakistani dynasty, Benazir Bhutto went into politics
after his father, and died. Young and beautiful, she clearly stood out
from the male Pakistani political establishment. Benazir led the country
as prime minister from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1996, and both
times was dismissed from office by the President because of corruption
charges which she vehemently denied. Benazir was assassinated in 2007,
when the country was ruled by a military junta. The current President of
Pakistan is her husband, who was also accused of fraud.

Angela Merkel, Germany's Angela.

Merkel - an
exceptional phenomenon in German politics: the first female chancellor,
also grew up in communist East Germany, as well as the youngest
chancellor in history. Its underrated on the continuation of decades,
but it is not broken. "I myself have never underestimated himself" - she
said in an interview with TIME in January 2010 "There is nothing wrong
with ambition, and ambition." She took office in late 2005, and 100 days
after the poll showed that it is the most popular chancellor of all
German history.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberia

In April 2006, First Lady Laura Bush America responded to Ellen as "a
woman who did not stop working for the good of their country." "Her
courage and dedication inspires me and women around the world," said
Mrs. Bush magazine TIME. Johnson-Sirleaf, started her career with the
membership of the Council of Ministers in 1970, then in the 90's became a
senior administrator of the UN, and in 2006 was elected president of
Liberia - the first woman president in Africa. She had to sum up years
of civil war in the country. Allen vowed to fight corruption and build a
brighter future of the country. George W. Bush presented her with a
2007 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Laura Bush said: "Johnson-Sirleaf - a
good example of what can happen if the girls get a good education."

Golda Meir, Israel

Called acute languages "the only guy in the Cabinet" Golda Meir was a
formidable and odious figure in Israeli politics. Tall, lean, sharp and
decisive, it has become for the world's epitome of the Jewish
stubbornness. "There are a variety of women - she said once - that did
not allow husbands to overshadow much of the horizon". After a brilliant
political career, including as Minister of Labour and Minister of
Foreign Affairs and several other senior positions, she went to bed, but
had returned to politics in the age of 70 years and led the country as
prime minister from 1969 to 1974.

by the popularity of cage shark-diving, a tourist attraction has opened
that allows adrenalin junkies the chance to swim with killer crocodiles.And, as these incredible pictures show, participants can get up close and personal with one of the worlds deadliest creatures.

Definitely no running, ducking bombing or petting in this pool: Face to face with one of the 125 stone monsters
All that separates thrill-seekers
from the huge saltwater crocodiles is a five-inch thick perspex box
that has, we are assured, undergone 'extensive' safety testing.Fearless participants climb into the clear container - nicknamed the Cage of Death - which is
suspended on a monorail track that runs above four crocodile enclosures.
Two grated doors lock into position
on the top of the 10ft tall box which is then lowered into the water
and comes to rest 2ft beneath the surface.To
ensure that the paying customers get their money's worth, chunks of meat are tied to the bottom
of the cage. The crocodiles instantly drawn to it when it enters the
water.The results vary
from the crocs 'eye-balling' the swimmer, rubbing against the cage or
going into a full on 'aggressive attack' against it.

largest of the beasts measures a whopping 18ft and weighs over 125

One of the mighty reptiles at the Crocosaurus Cove park in
Darwin, Australia, is named Burt. Film buffs might remember him from the first Crocodile
Dundee movie - he's the one who nearly ate Linda Koslowski's character.Sallie
Gregory, spokeswoman for the park, said: 'Many people find the
opportunity of getting to within a few inches from the jaws of these
crocodiles exhilarating.''People
often get activity ranging from an aggressive attack to a casual
eye-balling and swim past where the crocs are so close that they rub
against the cage.''Most
of the women who take part say they are happy just to watch the
crocodiles while guys tend to want the action and attack.' ¦

directors who has extensive experience with crocodiles wanted a concept
that allowed people to get up close to these ultimate predators in a
safe environment.''The
cage runs on a overhead monorail system, suspended over the enclosures
and is lowered into up to four separate enclosures as part of the 20
minute experience.''The
perspex is about 135mm thick and extensive testing in both the
manufacturing and the way the crocodiles would react to the cage were
carried out prior to the testing team entering the cage.'

The 'Cage Of Death' has been extensively tested
for safety. With one of these prehistoric killers just inches away, one
might hope so..
'The top of the cage has two
grated doors to stop anything entering the cage and a back up motor and
separate chain operates to ensure that in the event of a malfunction,
the cage can continue to operate.''The
cage generally allows about two feet from the surface of the water
though this can be adjusted if people are not strong swimmers and would
prefer to keep their head above water.' ¦
Among
the crocodiles people can swim alongside are the mating pair of Houdini
and Bess as well as Chopper, Denzel and of course movie star Burt.But
one of the most popular crocs is Wendell ¦ - he's the biggest and is
named after muscular Australian rugby star Wendell Sailor.Crocodile
attacks in the wild are quite rare these days. However, during the
Japanese army's retreat from Ramree Island in February 1945, saltwater
crocodiles are thought to have been responsible for the deaths of 400
Japanese soldiers.
British
troops encircled the swampland through which the Japanese were
retreating, resigning the Japanese to a night in a mangrove swamp which
was home to thousands of saltwater crocodiles.
The Ramree crocodile attacks are listed as 'The Greatest Disaster Suffered from Animals' in The Guinness Book of RecordsSaltwater
crocodiles are the largest reptiles on the planet. Their main habitat
is northern Australia and New Guinea, Indonesia and Borneo. They have
been known to kill and eat horses, water buffalo, and even sharks as
well as the occasional human.

Orangutans have long been seen
as very close to humanity in terms of their intelligence. Even their
name is derived from the Malay for 'Man Of The Woods'.
Orangs
have been observed to use tools and medicinal plants and even have a
primitive sort of economy, assigning value to (mainly food) gifts and
items shared by other orangs and keeping a running total of the balance
owing over time.But there
has rarely been a more explicit reminder of the narrow gap between
ourselves and our jungle cousins than this superb and affecting picture
of look that a mother gave her child.

It was touch and go for little Hesty the baby
orang utan for a while. The look her mother gives her seems to reflect
that special tenderness that we feel for the loved ones we almost lost

Hesty the baby orangutan has
just made her public debut at Denver Zoo. She is the first Sumatran
Orangutan born at the Colorado zoo in 25 years.
She
was born on June 19 but less than two weeks later had to be taken from
her mother Nias and put in an incubator because she was dehydrated,
weak and unresponsive.

Orangutans not only use tools but even use leaves as a primitive 'musical instrument' to amplify their calls

She was bottle fed by animal
experts until she was able to feed herself. Now both Nias and Hesty can
be seen by visitors to the zoo. ¦
It
is estimated that there are only about 6,000 Sumatran orangutans left
in the wild. They can only be found on the island of Sumatra in
Indonesia.

It's wrong, of course, to assign too much human
emotion to animal behaviour but it's hard not to see a glint of
innocent mischief in Hesty's eye here as she plays hide and seek with
the camera
