British cop's journey to and service for Islam-News
MAKKAH – Twenty four officers from the British Army visited the Kingdom to perform Umrah and Ziyarah. They were led by Brig. Richard, who embraced Islam 16 years ago. In 2000, Richard established an association for Muslim officers in the UK, which aims at organizing the affairs of 140,000 Muslim officers.
The Muslim British brigadier is proud that his association has succeeded in making the voice of Muslim officers in Britain heard to the decision-makers in the Home Office (Ministry of Interior) and the British government. This resulted in allowing the Muslim British policewoman to wear the Hijab, allocating prayer areas for them, allow them to break their fast at a specific time during the holy month of Ramadan, perform Eid prayer and consider Eid day a holiday, coordinate Muslims' work in the police through the patrols without this clashing with the time for taking breakfast (Iftar) or performing Taraweeh prayer and appointing representatives of the association in the branches of the British Police.
Richard confirmed that the association is working in rectifying the image that many British nationals have about Islam, acquainting them with the morals for dealing with Muslim families.
Brig. Richard said a British policewoman was fired from her job for insulting a Muslim policewoman. Richard has also chaired the investigation committee. He pointed out that, as Muslims, they try to show the teachings of Islam by way of conduct on the British street.
As to the story of his converting to Islam from Christianity, Brig. Richard said his inquisitiveness about Islam led him to read a copy of the meanings of the Qur'an in English. He said the verses: "Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs?" (Qur'an, 78:6-7) and their deep meaning caught his eye, as he could link it with what he had studied as a geologist. This led to a further question and finally to guidance. He stressed that it is impossible for any book to reveal this truth 1400 years ago, so the source of this Book must be Divine. He realized that the universe and all that it contains must be under a Supreme Being.
He said this truth led him to delve deeper into the Qur'an. He would read carefully a whole Juz' (part) of the Qur'an every night until he discovered a number of facts that illuminated his way to embracing Islam.
