RAMADAAN - GIFT OF HEALTH

Ramadaan, the most important month of our calendar is a tremendous gift from Allah to uplift and empower muslims. The most important message of Ramadaan is that we are not just body but body and soul. And that's what makes us human beings and that determines our value as human beings is the soul and not the body. During Ramadaan we deprive the body to uplift the soul. Ramadaan liberates us from all of this. Taking a break from the endless and futile pursuit of happiness in sensory pleasures helps to rediscover our inner self that has been buried deep under it. Devoting our time to the reading of the Qur'an, to extra prayers and supplications to Allah allow us to reflect and review the direction of our lives and establish priorities.

And amongst His innumerable blessings is that our bodies automatically receive a wealth of physical health benefits while we spiritually uplift our soul.

Rest and Rejuvenation
The entire digestive tract from the mouth down the stomach, liver, pancreas and intestines is at rest during the fast. Organs rested this way have time to repair and renew themselves for sustained work with renewed vigour.

Detoxification
The food we consume gives us life-sustaining nutrition as well as toxic by-products which are excreted in urine, stool and sweat. The detoxification process is undertaken by the liver which has ample time to catch up with its pending work during the hours of fasting.

Prevention of cell choking
Each cell in the body is a chemical factory. By the constant supply of digested products, the cell gets ‘choked’, and fasting gives it ample time to clear pending work.

Weight loss
Fasting leads to modest weight loss which results in a host of benefits like improvement in blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep, atherosclerosis, heart diseases, lung diseases, obesity, digestive disorders, fatty liver, infertility and prevention of heart attacks and strokes.

However, these benefits only come to those who adhere to their fasts the way it has been laid out in the Noble Qu’ran and Ahadith (Prophetic traditions) and not to those who fast all day and feast all night, as fasting in Ramadaan has widely become prevalent these days. Islam’s prescription of month-long fasting if done correctly, can act as an insurance against the obesity pandemic overtaking our society.

Tuning and Toning
During fasting, every day the glycogen storage in the liver gets depleted during the day and replenished in the night. Similarly, the dormant fat in the body cells gets renewed. This dormant fat is committed into active participation of energy generation.

Mental acuity and stamina
Fasting also improves mental acuity as well as increasing the physical and mental stamina of the fasting person. The more athletes practice, the more stamina they acquire. Fasting works the same way; making the body get used to working without the instant gratification provided by food and drink.

Doctor’s advice
Kindly break your fast with some dates, fruit and juice for instant energy, drink water and take a small, bland and easily digestible meal like porridge. Take your usual night meal and do not make your Sehri (pre dawn meal) too heavy or too light. Make sure to drink water at regular intervals. (Dr Ashraf Ali)

We wish all our readers, friends, certified plants, staff members, associates and Muslims the world over, a fulfilling Ramadaan of prayer, peace and contentment.

Ramadaan Mubarak

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

SANZAF - An organization formed to carry out a religious commandment

Established in 1974, SANZAF with 32 offices in 7 Provinces is one of the major National NGO’s in social welfare that reaches out to the poor, needy and destitute. SANZAF is a non-profit organisation (NPO) bearing the number 007-160, and is also registered as a tax exempt Public Benefit Organisation (PBO NO: 930001714) with the South African Revenue Services (SARS). As such, the organisation is authorised to issues s18A tax certificates that donors may use to save on their annual income tax returns.

Zakah is compulsory alms that Muslims are divinely commanded to pay to the needy - an amount of at least 2.5% on their accumulated excess wealth and certain classes of assets. In this regard, SANZAF's core activity is to assist Muslims in the effective collection and distribution of this religious obligation. Zakah is the third of five important pillars in Islam.

After more than three decades of selfless social services to South African communities, many have lauded SANZAF'’s poverty alleviation, empowerment, and upliftment initiatives. In 2007 SANZAF received the coveted FNB Islamic Finance “Community Organisation Of The Year” award in recognition of its work in the community.

Today as an initiative to break the cycle of poverty, the organization has shifted focus from its "handout approach" of the early years of merely putting out the so called fires of poverty to a developmental and empowerment approach by ploughing more funds into human resource development through its various projects and programmes.

SANZAF undertakes many activities, some of which includes :-

• Holistic welfare related services incorporating our FARD project.

• As its skills development initiative, it has classes for entrepreneurial development, in-house computer centre for specialist IT training, sewing/dress making, specialist cooking & chefs course etc..

• Providing educational opportunities via its bursary project (SANMBF).

• Is the counterpart organization to the Islamic Development Bank's loan scholarship programme in Southern Africa.

• The Student Development Programme is funded by the IDB Scholarship Trust. It provides specialist tuition to previously disadvantaged students in grades eleven & twelve so that they can acquire suitable grades to enter tertiary institutions.

• Facilitating the Muslim Feeding Scheme (MFS): Provides 20 000 hot meals monthly in Durban and surrounding areas to the poor.

• Is a founder member of the Muslim Prison Board (MPB) in KZN.

• Conducting literacy classes to benefit the illiterate in the community.

• Aiming to assist Muslim children of indigent families to further their Islamic education.

• Islamic Relief Agency (ISRA), endeavours to assist those afflicted by disaster locally and internationally.

• Operation Qurbani & Zabah: On behalf of those who may possess the means but no facilities to undertake their sacrifices. SANZAF also undertakes to distribute the Qurbani meat to the poor.

• Operation Fitrah, forms an integral part of SANZAF's Ramadaan programme, to ensure that needy Muslim families have sufficient recources for the day of Eid.

Undoubtedly, SANZAF is a friend of the poor and needy that has won the confidence of the Ummah. It also networks with many organizations in the spirit of brotherhood. Indeed, as a proudly South African organization SANZAF supports the endeavours of SANHA. May you grow from strength to strength, Ameen.

HADITH
(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

“Seek (Learn) the recitation of the Quraan from four persons – Abdullah bin Masud, Saalim the freed-slave of Abu Huzayfah, Ubayy bin Kab and Muaaz bin Jabal.”

Comment: The Hadith further adds to our understanding of the status of Muaaz radiyallahu anhu, the most learned of the Ummah concerning matters of Halaal and Haraam. We also understand from this the importance of knowledge of the Quraan in determining and establishing what is Lawful and unlawful.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Nothing can be more international than the human preoccupation of cooking. Dating back to 6000 BC, dishes have been developed in various areas of the world, bread being the most basic.

Indian: Chapati – thin, flat cake of unleavened whole meal bread

Indian: Naan – leavened bread, usually cooked in a clay oven

Middle Easter: Pita – flat, unleavened bread

Spanish and Latin American: Tortilla – thin maize-meal pancake, usually served hot with a savoury filling.

SMILE AWHILE

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

FREE RIDE

Our story for today is one of the government members who is in discussion with an entrepreneur who is desperate to win a huge contract. He offers to buy the official a top of the range sports car. The official was indignant and told the entrepreneur in no uncertain terms that decency and dedication to duty for him would preclude him from accepting such a gift and felt insulted that he was being offered something for free. He believed that if he wanted anything he would buy it and gladly pay for it. The entrepreneur immediately changed his approach. He apologised to the official and said “I am sorry, I understand and it won’t happen again.” He said sir, may I offer you a 2010 model sports car for R100? “Yes, that’s fine” said the official, “at that price I will take two.”

The African Perception of Allah - The Zulus

Notwithstanding Africa’s diversity of tribes, cultural patterns and the legacy of colonialism, most of the Continent still holds true the concept of Monotheism.

The perception of Allah as the Creator and only Supreme being worthy of worship is illustrated in African traditional names.

The Zulus of South Africa, a nation of 11 million people with a proud military history use the attribute “Umdali” meaning the Creator. Their traditional name for Allah is “Umvelinqangi” which means “He who brings that which is not there until He creates it”

Q - Is lunch bar chocolate Halaal?

A- Cadbury Lunch Bar have changed their Tartaric Acid to a Halaal variant since last year. Accordingly, the product is now deemed Halaal suitable. The ‘Best Before Date’ on the packaging should be 1st July 2010 and beyond.

Q- Is the Fruitime juice range Halaal suitable? When it comes to fruit juices that show on label "100% pure fruit juice/blend" is it in this case Halaal suitable?

A – 1. In terms of information at our disposal Fruitime Juice is Halaal suitable.

2. a) 100% pure fruit juice is Halaal suitable as long as the grape / apple base concentrate is approved as Halaal.

2. b) In the case of fruit juice blends, we have come across many instances where

Flavourants are a critical area in terms of Halaal suitability as the use of liquor / liquor extracts in flavourants are common place. We therefore advise that consumers be circumspect in this regard.

Ingredients play a vital role in baking. Whilst some may be decorative such as colourings and confections, others such as raising and thickening agents are unobtrusive.

CREAM of TARTAR

This substance is scientifically named Potassium bitartrate also known as Potassium hydrogen tartrate is a by product of wine making from the juice of grapes.

Health and Beauty

Look good - feel good. Tips for a sound mind in a sound body.

Natural Tips for Shiny Hair

Sun, wind, saltwater, pollution and chemicals are just some of the shine-depleting elements your hair may be subjected to on a daily basis. They can strip your hair of its natural oils and create build-up leaving it dull and lifeless.

Turn to natural methods and avoid those expensive products and treatments. Mother Nature has the solution to put the bounce back into your hair.

The Alluring Avocado
Mash an avocado (one avocado for short hair, two for long) in a bowl until it forms a thick paste. Spread the paste on your hair from root to tip and leave on for 20 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Avocados are high in fatty acids and nutrients. Feed your hair!

Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar
Mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with one quart of water and use as a hair rinse after your regular shampoo. Rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, apple cider vinegar helps break down residue build-up leaving your hair soft and full of shine. Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar and it will be shining in no time.
