Sherbini's funeral drew thousands as the govt is called on to take a firm stand on the murder

CAIRO (Al Arabiya)

Outrage over the murder of a pregnant Muslim woman in Germany who has become known as the "hijab martyr" mounted Tuesday following her funeral and protests in her native Egypt over what Muslims see as European Islamaphobia and western media double standards.

Marwa al-Sherbini, a 32-year-old Egyptian-German, was buried in her coastal hometown of Alexandria, Egypt Monday amid demonstrations by Egyptians mourning her senseless death and calling for retribution.
" What we demand is just some attention to be given to the killing of a young innocent mother on the hands of fanatic extremist "
Abdel Azim Hamad, al Shuruq

Sherbini was stabbed to death 18 times Wednesday as she prepared to testify against her assailant, who was in court to appeal a previous defamation conviction against her.

The assailant, knonw only as Alex W., had been convicted and fined €750 ($1,050) last year for calling Sherbini a "terrorist," "b*tch" and "Islamist" after she asked him to leave a swing for her three-year-old son Mustafa.

Her funeral drew thousands of angry mourners and Egyptian officials who called on the government to seriously deal with the tragic killing and take immediate action.

"There is no god but God and the Germans are the enemies of God," they chanted.

Ramzi Ezz, Egypt's ambassador in Germany told Al Arabiya the results of the investigations could be released in a few days, but noted that Egyptian law calls for life imprisonment of the murderer.

Sherbini's brother Tarek al-Sherbini vowed to avenge her killing. "We believe in an eye for an eye," he told Egyptian national television.

Dubbed the "martyr of the head scarf," Sherbini was three months pregnant when her 28-year-old attacker stabbed her countless times in front of her two-year-old son.

Commentators said the hushed Western media response proved European bias against Muslims
[cid:image006.jpg@01CA0567.2B5854E0]

"The killer is a terrorist who should receive severe punishment for what he has done, something that contradicts all the values of humanity, decency and religion," Grand Imam Sheikh Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi told Egypt's official MENA news agency.

Alex also stabbed Sherbini's husband, Elwi Ali Okaz while he was trying to save his wife. And adding further insult to injury, a security guard shot Okaz in the leg because he mistook the husband for the attacker because of his ethnic looks according to German prosecutors.

"The guards thought that as long as he wasn't blond, he must be the attacker so they shot him," Sherbini told an Egyptian television station.
Alex W. remained in detention and prosecutors have begun investigating the murder but have downplayed it as a lone incident.

Christian Avenarius, the prosecutor in Dresden where the incident took place, said the killer was driven by a deep hatred of Muslims. "It was very clearly a xenophobic attack of a fanatical lone wolf."

A German government spokesperson condemned the attack and said Berlin "naturally condemns this in the strongest terms."

Sherbini's shocking death ignited angry protests on the ground and online as shocked mourners held her murder up as proof of the xenophobia gripping European politics.

"This isolated incident is a foreseen consequence of the kind of anti-burqa and anti-niqab rhetoric Sarkozy has engaged in France," one user said on a Muslim listserv.

Others said the incident showed the extent to which hate crimes against Muslims are ignored while those of Muslims against westerners are over-hyped.

Abdel Azeem Hamad, chief editor of the independent Egyptian daily al-Shorouk, said that if the victim had been a Jew, there would have been an uproar.

" Had it been an 'honor' killing, we would already have several NGO's condemn it and experts on Muslim issues speaking on why these terrible Muslims do these terrible things "
Nagihan, user on Muslim listserv

"What we demand is just some attention to be given to the killing of a young innocent mother on the hands of fanatic extremist," he wrote in his column.

Many in Sherbini's homeland were outraged by the attack and saw the low key response in Germany as an example of racism and anti-Muslim sentiment.

An Egyptian blogger Hicham Maged wrote that it simply proved anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe "Just imagine if the situation was reversed and the victim was a Westerner who was stabbed anywhere in the world or — God forbid — in any Middle Eastern country by Muslim extremists," he said.

Western media muted
" May God forgive this woman and give her eternal paradise for literally being killed for her beliefs "
Facebook fan

One commentator pointed to muted response by Western media as proof of double standards against Muslims as Sherbini's murder comes as western media continued to reference the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh for his controversial film on Muslim women but meanwhile ignoring the-week-old death of a Muslim German woman by a European fundamentalist.

"I can't believe it took so long for this news to reach me/us. Had it been an 'honor' killing, we would already have several NGO's condemn it and experts on Muslim issues speaking on why these terrible Muslims do these terrible things," Nagihan, a user on a Muslim list serve wrote. "I am shocked and awed at this double standard."

A Facebook fan page created recently drew a whooping 300,000 fans in less than a week, with many mourning Sherbini as a martyr and calling for spiritual purification.

"May God forgive this woman and give her eternal paradise for literally
being killed for her beliefs," said one Facebook fan.

Alexandria's Popular Local Council said it would name a street after Sherbini to commemorate her senseless killing.

As Salaam o Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatuh!

(Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings!)

Welcome to the e-mail list of the Islam Q&A website.

1. A Christian woman is close to becoming Muslim and is married to a (Muslim) man who does not pray. What is the ruling on her marriage?
use link
http://islamqa.com/en/ref/115985
There is a Christian woman who lives in Canada and is married to a Muslim man. She wanted to find out about Islam, and she has learned a lot at close hand and wanted to embrace it some day, but she was frustrated because she sees that her husband is careless about prayer, and the matter is so bad that he stopped praying a few months ago, until now. After he lost his job, he started to stay at home and his wife is the one who works and spends on household expenses. He just sits at the computer, talks to women and watches permissive movies on the net. To make matters worse, the wife found out about that by means of spy programs.
What advice can you offer them? Please note that scholars differ as to whether the one who does not pray is a kaafir. I hope that you can explain this issue to us according to both views. May Allaah bless you. And I hope that you could send us the answer in both Arabic and English. May Allaah reward you with good.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
The scholars are unanimously agreed that the one who does not pray because he denies that it is obligatory is a kaafir who is doomed to remain eternally in the fire of Hell if he dies in that state, but they differed concerning the one who does not pray, not because he denies that it is obligatory, but because he is lazy and heedless. The majority of them said that he should be asked to repent, and if he repents all well and good, otherwise he is to be executed as a hadd punishment. Others said that he should be given a disciplinary punishment (ta'zeer) and imprisoned until he starts to pray. So there are three opinions concerning this issue:
The first opinion: that the one who does not pray is a kaafir, without differentiating between the one who denies it and the one who is lazy. This is the view of the Sahaabah, and no difference of opinion is known among them. Among those who hold this view are: Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) according to the more correct of the two opinions narrated from him, Ibn al-Mubaarak, Ishaaq ibn Raahawayh and Mansoor al-Faqeeh among the Shaafa'is. It was also narrated from Abu'l-Tayyib ibn Salamah among the Shaafa'is.
The second opinion: that the one who does not pray because he is lazy and heedless, not because he denies it, is one of the evildoers among the Muslims, but he is not a kaafir. However, he should be asked to repent -- although they differed concerning the time that should be allowed for that -- then if he repents, all well and good, otherwise he is to be executed as a hadd punishment! Like the married adulterer, but he should be executed with the sword. This is the view of Maalik and his companions, and it is the view of al-Shaafa'i and most of his companions.
The view that someone like this should be executed as a hadd punishment is subject to further discussion. We have explained the error of this opinion in the answer to question number 6035<http://islamqa.com/en/ref/6035>.
The third opinion: that the person who does not pray deliberately, because he is lazy and heedless, although he acknowledges that it is obligatory, is not a kaafir and should not be executed, rather he should be given a disciplinary punishment (ta'zeer) and imprisoned until he begins to pray.
This is the view of Imam Abu Haneefah (may Allaah have mercy on him) and his companions, and of a number of the people of Kufah, Sufyaan al-Thawri, and of al-Mazani the companion of al-Shaafa'i, but it is the weakest of the opinions.
Many practical rulings are based on the difference in opinion on the ruling on one who does not pray, such as: whether he inherits, inheritance from him, whether he is to be washed and buried in the Muslim graveyard, whether the funeral prayer is to be offered for him, ruling on meat slaughtered or hunted by him, whether his marriage remains valid and other rulings.
For those who say that the one who does not pray is a kaafir -- even if he does not deny it is obligatory -- all the rulings on apostates apply to him. So he cannot inherit or be inherited from, he cannot be washed (after he dies), he cannot be buried in the Muslim graveyard, the funeral prayer cannot be offered for him, meat slaughtered by him is not halaal and his marriage contract becomes invalid.
For those who ruled that he is not a kaafir, the rulings mentioned above do not apply to him; rather he is regarded as an evildoer among the Muslims and one who is committing a major sin, but the majority of them say that he should be asked to repent, then if he does not pray, he is to be executed as a hadd punishment! Similarly -- in their view -- if he is married to a Christian or Jewish woman, then his marriage contract is deemed to be valid, and is the marriage contract between a Muslim man and a woman from the People of the Book.
The more correct of these two opinions is the first one, because of the apparent meaning of the evidence from the Qur'aan and Sunnah, and because of the consensus of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) concerning that.
This is what was stated in fatwas by shaykhs such as: Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem, 'Abd al-'Azeez ibn Baaz, Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen, the scholars of the Standing Committee and others, despite the difference of opinion concerning the hadd punishment which the one who does not pray is thought to deserve.
Based on that: the marriage contract between this man and that woman is a marriage contract between an apostate and the Christian woman -- if she is still following her religion -- and her situation is less serious than his, because she is a woman of the People of the Book, whilst he is an apostate from his religion.
See also the answers to questions number 2182<http://islamqa.com/en/ref/2182>, 5208<http://islamqa.com/en/ref/5208>, 33007<http://islamqa.com/en/ref/33007> and 10094<http://islamqa.com/en/ref/10094>.
Secondly:
With regard to the woman asked about, if she has become Muslim, it is not permissible for her to stay with a man who does not pray. The ruling on that has been discussed above in detail.
But if she is still a nonbeliever, then their are no rulings that have to do with her marriage to him, because they are both not Muslim. Neither of them is Muslim so that the rulings of sharee'ah would apply to their marriage.
We advise her to leave this man and marry a man who is really a Muslim. Because he does not pray, he is not regarded as a Muslim, and the evils and sins that he commits are not part of the Muslim's attitude. Moreover, as seems to be the case to us from the question, he is lacking in chivalry and decency, because he agrees to his wife going out to work and bearing the burden of earning a living, whilst he sits at home. By Allaah, his attitude would be wrong even if he were staying home to read Qur'aan and pray, whilst his wife goes out to work and support him, so what should we say about him when he is staying home to commit sin and evil?
What we say to this wife is: O female slave of Allaah, do not look at the religion on the basis of its people or on the basis of one of them; rather look at what there is in it of truth, goodness, honesty and righteousness. As for the people, if your husband is as you describe, then among the Muslims there are people who adhere to its etiquette, rulings and morals and manners apart from this man. There are still people, among both Muslims and non-Muslims, who are sincere, righteous and decent, and there are some who are not like that. But the attitude of the Muslim, if he still follows his religion properly is more sublime and more righteous and purer than the attitude of others. Think about it and you will find that this is true. Remember that most of the Muslims around you are interested in worldly gains and greed, and they have gone against the rulings of their religion which forbid living in the lands of the kuffaar for the sake of worldly gains and greed, so what kind of attitude do you expect from them? Very few of them adhere to the commands of their religion, or they are living there for a reason which makes that permissible.
O female slave of Allaah, hasten and do not delay; do not let people and their attitudes be a barrier between you and light from your Lord. Every soul is a pledge for that which it has earned, and people will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection one by one, and no soul will bear the burden of another: it will get what it deserves, good or bad. So come to the light that you have seen, and beware of delaying, lest darkness overwhelm you and the light of guidance disappear.
If there is something that is keeping you away from the light, remove it from your eyes no matter what it is, and hasten towards your Lord on His straight path.
And Allaah knows best.

2. He sets up training courses, then he makes a contract with the trainer and the owner of the venue
use link
http://islamqa.com/en/ref/105344
I organise educational and training courses for working people. I suggest courses and receive from the companies a list of attendees and payment in full, then I make an agreement with the trainer -- who does not work with me -- and I pay him his fees and the costs of the training venue from the payment I have received. What is the ruling on that?.
Praise be to Allaah.
There is nothing wrong with supervising educational and training courses in the manner that you have described, and receiving payment in advance. This is a kind of hiring which the scholars call "hiring for a specific task", the aim of which is work that has been agreed upon between one who is hired and the one who hired him, without any stipulation that the work should be done by a specific person. The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is permissible to pay the entire fee in advance; in fact, some of them -- such as the Shaafa'is -- say that this is obligatory and regard it as a condition of it being permissible.
And Allaah knows best.
See: al-Mawsoo'ah al-Fiqhiyyah, 32/286-287
And Allaah knows best.
We ask Allah the Most High, the All-Powerful, to teach us that which will benefit us, and to benefit us by that which we learn. May Allah grant blessings and peace to our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions! (Ameen)

What is Bid'ah?

Linguistically Bid'ah (innovation) means 'a newly invented matter'. The Sharee'ah definition of Bid'ah is: "A newly invented way [beliefs or action] in the religion, in imitation of the Sharee'ah (prescribed Law), by which nearness to Allaah is sought, [but] not being supported by any authentic proof - neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed." Al-I'tisaam of ash-Shaatibee (1/37).

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said: "Every innovation is misguidance and going astray" Reported by Abu Daawood (no. 4607), at-Tirmidhee (no. 2676) and it is saheeh. Ibn Hajr authenticated it Takhreej Ahaadeeth Ibn ul-Haajib (1/137).

And he (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) also said: "... and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the Hellfire." Reported by an-Nasaa'ee (1/224) from Jaabir bin Abdullaah and it is saheeh as declared by Shaikh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah in Majmoo' ul-Fataawaa (3/58).

The Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) also warned against the People of Innovation, from befriending, supporting or taking from them saying: "Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator then upon him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of mankind." Reported by Bukhaaree (12/41) and Muslim (9/140)

And in his footsteps, we find the Noble Companions and the Taabi'een after them warning from the danger of innovations upon the Ummah, its people and their unity, since it is innovations which have divided the Ummah and split it asunder.

Abdullah Ibn Abbaas (d. 68H) said: "Indeed the most detestable of things to Allaah are the innovations." Reported by al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraa (4/316)

Abdullah Ibn Abbaas <http://www.allaahuakbar.net/sahabah/abdullah_ibn_abbas.htm> said, "When "Bid'ah" is created then the Sunnah dies and this continues until that "Bid'ah" is living and the Sunnah is dead."

Ibn Umar (d. 84H) said: "Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good." Reported by Abu Shaamah (no. 39)

Ahmad Ibn Hanbal<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/ahmad_ibn_hanbal.htm> once said, "The greatest sinner (faasiq) from the Ahl-Sunnah Wal Jamaah is better than the most pious person from Ahl-"Bid'ah".

'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/sahabah/abdullah_ibn_masud.htm>, said, "Follow and do not innovate, for you have been given that which is sufficient and every innovation is misguidance." Reported by Abu Khaithamah in Kitaab Ul-'Ilm (no. 540) and declared saheeh by Shaikh al-Albaanee.

Al-'Irbaad ibn Saariyah, reports that the Prophet said, ".... I have left you upon clear guidance. Its night is like its day. No one deviates from it after me except that he is destroyed." Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Maajah (no. 43) and al-Haakim. It is declared saheeh by Shaikh al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah (no. 937).

Al-Marwazee reports in as-Sunnah (no. 95) that 'Umar ibn 'Abd Allah-'Azeez said, "There is no excuse for anyone, after the Sunnah, to be misguided upon error which he thought was guidance."

Hasan Ibn Attiya, one of the Ta'baeen said, "When the people accept the "Bid'ah" , Allah removes the Sunnah from among them and doesn't return it until the day of judgment."

One of the early scholars, Al-Barbahaaree,<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/prohibition_of_disputation.htm> one of the companions of Ahmed Ibn Hanbal<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/ahmad_ibn_hanbal.htm>, said, "Beware of "Bid'ah", because every "Bid'ah" started out as something small and resembling the truth and people were fooled by it and followed it until it became bigger and bigger and were trapped by it and it took them out of Islaam."

Shaykh al-Barbaharee (D. 329H Rahimahullah)<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/prohibition_of_disputation.htm> Also states: May Allah have mercy upon you. Know that the Religion is what came from Allaah, the Blessed and the Most High. It is not something left to the intellect and opinions of men. Knowledge of it is what comes from Allaah and His Messenger, so do not follow anything based upon your desires and so deviate away from the Religion and leave Islam. There will be no excuse for you since Allaah's Messenger explained the Sunnah to his Ummah and made it clear to his Companions and they are the Jamaa'ah and they are the Main Body, and the Main Body is the truth and its followers.

This matter has also been indicated by Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah)<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/maalik_ibn_anas.htm> in a reported saying of his that ought to be recorded in golden ink. And it is his saying: "Whosoever introduces into Islaam an innovation, which he deems is good, then he has claimed that Muhammad has betrayed (the trust of conveying) the Message. Read the saying of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'This day I have completed your Religion for you, and I have perfected My favour upon you, and I am pleased with Islaam as a Religion for you.' [Surat-ul-Maa'idah: 3] So whatever was not (part of) the Religion on that day, is not (part of) the Religion on this day. And the last part of this ummah (nation) will not be rectified, except by that which its first part was rectified by."

Ibn Taymiyyah<http://www.allaahuakbar.net/scholars/ibn_taymiyyah/index.htm> has a nice passage in one of his books showing that: "In fact, the kufr of Jews and Christians is because of "Bid'ah". They introduced new things into the religion and those things took them completely away from the true message of Musa (Moses) and Isaa (Jesus) Alaihumma Salam".

Answer:

Salam, Sara.
Thank you for writing to us.

Your first question asks if sisters can go to mosques for Prayers and other activities, and states that you have heard from some friends' parents that this is not permissible in Islam.

Allow me to start with this statement. In fact, Sara, the real problem is the way we gain our knowledge of Islamic law. Most of us depend on what we hear from unqualified people. Thus, at the end we only have fragmented pieces of knowledge that can never lead us to successfully developing our Islamic identity.

Actually, the scarcity of sources is no longer a problem; the Quran, books of explanation of the Quran, Hadith (sayings of the Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him), fiqh (detailed Islamic understanding), sirah (biography of the Prophet), Islamic history...etc. are all available now in most languages.

Islamic web sites are rich in information as well. We can directly access such sources, in order to obtain genuine knowledge. If something is too vague for us to understand on our own, the scholars are now more reachable through the specialized fatwa (religious rulings) sections online.

Allah says what means: *{...ask those who have knowledge, if you do not know.}* (An-Nahl 16:43)

Yet, in saying that, Sara, I don't mean of course to diminish the value of our parents' opinions. They are the major source of knowledge from experience in our life, and they should always be very much appreciated. Nevertheless, the nature of Islamic knowledge is quite different, as it always needs qualified scholars to deal with, in order to avoid some of the intellectual chaos that is spreading nowadays in the Islamic world.

This has taken place as a result of having amateurs involving themselves in the process of giving religious rulings and mixing their personal attitudes with the rules of religion.

As for your demand to know a proof for the permissibility of women going to mosques, the Prophet said: "If your women ask permission to go to the mosque at night, allow them" (Al-Bukhari).

He also said: "Do not prevent the maid- servants of Allah from going to the mosques" (Muslim).

Again it was narrated by Ibn Umar that the Prophet said: "Do not prevent women from going to the mosques at night." A boy said to Ibn Umar: "We would never let them go out, that they may not be caught in evil." Ibn Umar reprimanded him and said: "I am saying that the messenger of Allah said this and you say: no, we will not allow it?" (Muslim).

Actually, the regulations that do not permit women to wear perfumes on their way to mosques and that instruct women to pray in the back rows behind men are in themselves evidence of the permissibility of their praying in mosques.

A similar funny situation was that the Prophet asked women not to precede men in lifting their heads from prostration (sujud), as some men at that time were too poor to have clothes to cover themselves properly. Thus, when men made prostration, parts of their bodies became visible. This did not make the Prophet prevent women from praying behind men to solve the problem.

What he did instead, was that he said, "O womenfolk, do not lift your heads till men are raised" (Muslim). What is wonderful about his incident is that he trusted them not to betray.

The Prophet used to encourage women to witness Eid Prayer (the prayer at annual celebrations such as at the end of Ramadan). In fact, this was repetitively mentioned in Hadith. Ibn Abbas said: "The Prophet would take his wives and daughters to the two Eid Prayers" (Ibn Majah and Al-Baihaqi).

He further reported that after the Prophet had prayed and given the prayer's speech, he went to the women and admonished them, reminded them of Allah, and ordered them to give charity" (Al-Bukhari).

Not only did the prophet allow women to go for prayers, but he also encouraged them to go to public religious teaching circles. Some women requested the Prophet to fix a day for them, as men were taking up all his time. On that, he promised them a day for religious lessons and commandments (Al-Bukhari).

The question here is: how would Islam deprive half the society from tasting the sweetness and rewards of congregational prayers, whether in prayers itself or through listening to the useful teachings that are accompany them? What is made useful for men is necessarily useful for women, being men's partners in the same rights and duties either in this life or the life to come.

The misunderstanding, Sara, arises from the misinterpretation of a hadith that says: "a woman's prayer in the hall of her house is better than her payer in the mosque and her prayer in her bedroom is better than her prayer in the hall of her house." This hadith means to show that the congregational prayer is not obligatory on women as it is on men. Women are not asked to perform the five daily prayers in the mosques and still, they will have the same rewards if they do them at home.

As for your second question: "what can make our Ummah better?" This is a question that needs volumes to answer. The problem is not a lack of ideas as there are many, but it is in the sincerity and truthfulness that we need in our hearts in order to make this dream come true. We are more responsible for the realization of this aim as individuals than those in the levels of authority. Allah, says what means:
*{Verily, never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.}* (Ar-Rad 13:11)

This means, that when we are in a bad situation as an Ummah we are instructed to focus on changing ourselves. We should develop our piety and become aware of God - both in public and in secret, in worship and in communication with others, we should control our behavior, increase our knowledge of Islam and help others to increase theirs as well.

I hope this answers your question. Please keep in touch.

Salam.

MURDER FOR WEARING SCARF

Posted by: "inshrah khan" inshrahkhan@yahoo.com

Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:17 am (PDT)

Had it been a Muslim who had stabbed the German 18 times
and killed him/her, it would have had front page coverage in mass media immediately
with head lines such as "barbaric and violent Muslim terrorists stabs innocent girls 18 times!!"
Such are the times that even wearing of a head scarf is a death sentence.

The tragedy is that the worst dictatorship in the world, a master in the arts of torture,
who is outsorced by US for their expertise in torture has cynically used this incident
to divert the popution's attention from its own record of the most gross violations of
human rights and human dignity. And then the Empire preaches of
human rights and decomocracy!!!!!!

Tragic Symbol: Egypt's Headscarf Martyr
By Abigail Hauslohner / Cairo

The murder of Marwa al-Sherbini, a 32-year-old Egyptian pharmacist stabbed
to death in a German courtroom last week, has stoked growing anger in Egypt,
where the local press has taken to referring to Sherbini as the "headscarf martyr."
But with everyone from Islamists to the government claiming her as a symbol of their cause,
Sherbini's death is transitioning from shocking tragedy to a weapon of religion and politics.

On July 1, as a pregnant Sherbini prepared to give evidence against a German man of
Russian descent who had been convicted and fined for trying to remove Sherbini's headscarf
and calling her a terrorist, the man ran across the courtroom and stabbed her 18 times.
The attack has set off a wave of outrage in Egypt over what is perceived to be rising European
racism and anti-Islamic sentiment. "What's the problem with wearing the headscarf?" asks Ahmed Kiskh,
a Cairo convenient-store owner. "This is racism against Islam, and ignorance about Islam."
(See TIME's photos of Islam's soft revolution)

Adding insult to injury, many say, was the indifference of the Western press -
German papers at first buried the story, while it took papers in other countries several
days to pick up on it.
There was also the added detail that Sherbini's husband was shot and injured
by a guard who at first thought he was the attacker.
And all that was compounded by the initial lack of a formal apology from Germany.
(On Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her condolences to
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the G-8 summit in Italy).
"Had the Muslim been the aggressor as the guards initially thought,
the story would have made headlines ...
It would have perfectly fitted into the promoted image of Muslims being aggressive,
barbaric and uncivilized," wrote a columnist in Egypt's main English language daily, Daily News Egypt.

In Egypt, the reaction has been impassioned - some would say extreme.
When Sherbini's body was buried in her hometown of Alexandria on Monday,
thousands turned out for the funeral, raising banners and, according to wire reports,
chanting slogans such as, "The Germans are the enemies of God" and "Down with Germany."
Sherbini's brother told the Associated Press that the family would "avenge her killing" and
The Sheikh of Al-Azhar, one of Egypt's top government-sponsored religious authorities,
called for the maximum punishment for Sherbini's murderer.
The Egyptian Pharmacists' Syndicate has even suggested a boycott of German drugs.
(See TIME's photos of the muslim world)

Not everyone is buying into the frenzied rhetoric. "'Death to Germany?' Why?,"
asks taxi driver, Mohamed Abu Maryam, who says he is dismayed by some of the responses.
"Why blame a country for the actions of an individual?"

But for many, Sherbini has become a convenient martyr,
an easy, emotional means to an end -
or a distraction from Egypt's domestic woes.
"The Islamists in Egypt have already [begun] using this as a card to mobilize for the veil -
not for the right of women to wear whatever they want, but in defense of the veil,"
Hossam el-Hamalawy, an Egyptian journalist and author of the popular blog Arabawy.org, tells TIME.

Indeed, Sherbini's heroic status in the Egyptian press appears in large part
to derive from her determination to wear the headscarf in what has been painted
as a landscape of cruel, racist taunting. Her death has also become the latest
weapon in the controversy over remarks made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy last month,
in which he equated the most conservative style of Islamic women's dress, the burqa, with subservience.
"This is cowardly act supported by many western politicians like Sarkozy ...
We should stand against such an inhumane act," wrote one man on the message board of a
Facebook group titled "Defending The Rights of the Late Marwa El-Sherbini,
which claims over 1,000 members.

But more salient than the women's dress issue is the manipulation of Sherbini
as a symbol of Islam in a perceived stand-off between the Muslim world and the West.
"She is a martyr of Islam and justice will be served on the day of judgment," wrote one man
on the wall of another Facebook group, "Marwa El-Sherbini 'Muslim Martyr.'" Even Iran,
Egypt's traditional adversary, has joined the fray, holding a symbolic funeral for Sherbini in
Tehran on Friday, and summoning the German ambassador to the Foreign Ministry
to hear Iran's formal protest over the attack.

Some accuse the Egyptian government, too,
of claiming Sherbini's tragedy for its own purposes.
The attention the government has given the case - called a "bloodbath"
in the state-sponsored press - strikes many in Egypt as contrived,
given Egypt's dismal track record in protecting its citizens both at home and abroad.
Human rights organizations and the local press point to abuses suffered by Egyptian
migrant workers in the Persian Gulf states, as the government seemingly turns a blind eye.
"The government is also trying to hijack the campaign and trying to present itself as
patriotic in defense of Egyptians abroad," says journalist Hamalawy.
"What do they do for the Egyptians who are in the Gulf
and who actually face similar treatment, if not worse?"

For the man in the street, Sherbini provides an easy outlet for Egyptian frustration -
a distraction, some say, from the more serious abuses of an authoritarian regime
. "The whole thing is just stupid. But it's convenient," says popular blogger Mahmoud Salem.
"It's an opportunity to have fake outrage because it keeps Egyptians busy."

The ultimate impact of Sherbini's death remains uncertain, but what's clear is
that Egypt will continue to hold the murdered pharmacist up as a martyr
as long as someone, or some group, finds it useful to do so.
"The debate could be taken in any direction at the moment," says Hamalawy.
"It depends on the actors on the ground . . .
and how they are going to mobilize around it."

A very touching moment
(Dedicated to a wonderful feeling called-FRIENDSHIP)

Year : 1975
Situation : Last day of school

Arjun Singh and Pargat Singh are very close friends. The whole school talked about their friendship. They had been friends right from their kindergarten days. They have studied together, roamed around together, sat together in school, ate together. They both wanted to become Police officials and serve the country. But today was a day they always dreaded. It was their last day together..

On their way back from school, Arjun started talking.

Arjun:   Bro! I am moving to a different city to study. I will miss you man.
Pargat:   I will miss you too mate. But nothing can break our friendship. We will at least meet once every year.
Arjun:    Yes!!! That's a deal.

And they parted with tears in their eyes...

As time went by, both got busy with their work life. They kept their promise for two years and after that they moved on with their own lives and in the process Arjun lost his contact with Pargat. Time went by and both became Police Officers.

Year: 2009
Venue: The Police station where Arjun works

Tring... Tring...

Arjun picks up the call and he gets a pleasant surprise...

"Is this Arjun?"
"Yes. Who is on the line?"
" Bro. It's Pargat! I just found out that you are posted in this station."

Tear drops welled up Arjun's eyes.

Arjun:   Where are you?
Pargat:   I am standing outside the Police station. Come Out.
Arjun:   Is it? I am coming right away.

Arjun rushed out of the police station and saw Pargat standing outside. They were seeing each other for the first time after thirty years. He wanted to go and hug his friend. But he could not hug his friend. It was a very touching moment for both of them :

Something that I always find strange is when large corporates spend an
unbelievable amount of money on something that surely won't have any effect
at all. <http://fun-maag.blogspot.com/2009/07/coke-zero-game.html>

Now, I've never tried Coke Zero, but while having a little stumble the other
day I came across the Coke Zero site Which didn't just impress me, but
literally blew my Primark 33p a pair socks
off!<http://fun-maag.blogspot.com/2009/07/coke-zero-game.html>

Great Cost Cutting Measures for Office

Love Funny Mails? Join our Group Funzug!

EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2009

NEW OFFICE POLICY

Dress Code:
1) You are advised to come to work dressed according to your salary.

2) If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we will assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a raise.

3) If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise.

4) If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

Sick Days:
We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

Personal Days:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturdays & Sundays.

Bereavement Leave:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend the funeral arrangements in your place. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early.

Bathroom Breaks:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet. There is now a strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open, and a picture will be taken. After your second offense, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board under the 'Chronic Offenders' category. Anyone caught smiling in the picture will be sectioned under the company's mental health policy.

Lunch Break:
* Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch, as they need to eat more, so that they can look healthy.

* Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.

* Chubby people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time needed to drink a Slim-Fast.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternation
And input should be directed elsewhere.
