[image: Roshan Abbas (l) and Ameen Sayani]

*READER-REPORTER ROSHAN ABBAS IS A RADIO JOCKEY**, *
*TV HOST, **EMCEE AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ENCOMPASS,*
*ONE OF INDIAS PREMIER CONTENT CREATION COMPANIES *

**

*Ameen saab, youve had a career in radio, spanning more than **half a
century
*Thats right; I started commercial broadcasting in 49. But Ive been a
broadcaster since 39.
*

When you were just seven.

*(Laughs) When I was just seven. *

If you can tell us how you started out

*It began with the AIR (All India Radio), where I had the opportunity to
work with manystalwarts in broadcasting. I was an English broadcaster,
mainly for childrens programmes.

There were people like Sultan Padamsee, also the creator of a theatre group,
Adi Marzban, one of the finest radio producers ever; Derek Geoffries who was
one of the best radio mixers, excellent with sound effects and mood music;
and finally Hameed bhai (Hameed Sayani), an excellent radio drama artist and
my own brother.

**

*Youve seen the best and the worst times of radio. This is the era of
television. When do you think the loyalties shifted?*
*

*Radio did not suffer because of television. Both have their own distinct
slots. You could be going about your routine listening to the radio. Ive
had thousands of students saying, `We could not study unless the radio was
playing in the background.

The popularity of AIR suffered because of wrong policies the I&B
ministers decision to ban Indian film songs, was one. This also meant less
sponsored programmes which hurt radio. These programmes could be produced
outside by different people, scriptwriters and programmers, so you didnt
get bored with the same RJs all the time. Also, the crme de la crme of
intelligentsia used to work for the AIR, and with Indian film music going,
listener-ship went, and so did these people. Finally, a kind of
pseudo-sobriety was imposed upon the presentation. Broadcasters were not
allowed to use the words I or me or we.
**

*And in doing that they were taking away the personality of the presenters.*

*
*Absolutely. They were killing radio stars. People were not to smile
unnecessarily! You had to be very sober and announce a romantic song in a
deep mournful voice, as if to indicate that some great national leader had
popped it.
**

*And what about Radio Ceylon?
*The popularity of Radio Ceylon, which had sponsored programmes and was the
peoples radio, petered out because of a different reason the neglect of
the transmitter by the station at a time when Peking and Moscow were
broadcasting in Hindi and English, and had started a transmitter which was
at least 10 times more powerful on the same meter band, to knock others out.
This adversely affected Radio Ceylons reception. **

VAJPAYEE'S VISIT TO PAKISTAN

On this auspicious occasion when both India and Pakistan are having their Independence Days with a difference of one day only, I am sending my one old poem which was written on the occasion of the then Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee's visit to Pakistan and published in many Indian newspapers.
'A journey to the India- Pakistan border in bus' that was published in the Indian newspapers in 2004.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -
ON THE OCCASION OF PRIME MINISTER ATAL BIHARI
VAJPAYEE'S VISIT TO PAKISTAN
************ ********* ********* ********* **
Through
this rising dust that envelops me all around,
My ears can hear a sweet and faint sound.
" Bear this all ! If you wish for happier days,
To get your progeny bathed in benign rays.
This blessed phase is the opening of a vista new,
Its memoirs will mould the people's future view.
This tedium will jolt you out of sleep,
To stay cheerful and never to weep.
The hearts , the violence of time tended to crack,
The souls that were always prone to rack ;
Those hearts and souls will see a radiant charm,
The pangs of past will get a soothing calm."

Oh! This racing time has brought the evening's dark,
Its gloomy look has begun to make me stark.
I fear, like countless yearnings, this too may fall,
I might feel this all as a dreamer's call.
To erect new walls, the callous hands may come again,
The incessant sobs and wails may turn in vain.
This appalling and horrid dread of night,
Makes me nervous
and gives me deepest fright.
Oh! Is it the bemused mind or visitations from afar?
What these fearsome glimpses of white robes are?
Shimmering in the long distances of this barren land,
Am I flummoxed by the grey patches of sand.?

Oh no ! I am conscious, can see them moving fast,
My heart is sinking, I am feeling all aghast.
Are they evil spirits ,coming to block my way,?
Or some ethereal beings, wanting to have their say.?
Oh! Slowly, slowly, they have gathered round me,
Their look is celestial; they are swarming like a hive of bee.
The ambient piety that surrounds this angelic scene,
Has silenced   my storm and made me serene.
Oh! Some virtuous words are pouring into my ears,
They sound like prescient counsel from the mouth of seers.
Within my earshot, the voice now seems to come,
I can pick up the sounds from all this hum.

"This desolate landscape through which you
pass,
Years before was green and covered with verdant grass.
A sweep of time turned it into a barren land,
Alas ! this  all was done by humans' fiendish hand.
The maddened frenzy was never so savage,
The swirling maelstrom could never ravage;
The emotional strings to the deepest core,
Such a rabid hate between brothers was never seen before.
Look around through dark with intent gaze,
Your eyes can see, if free from blur and haze.
Our innocent blood soaked through the soil here,
When for brothers, the daggers of brothers had no care.
Our piercing groans and agonizing shrieks,
Our plaintive wails and cries enthused those freaks.
The lasting bonds nurtured through centuries' love,
Were torn apart to the anguish of every dove.
The stench of rotten corpses shook the nature's faith,
In human wisdom and its width and breadth.

We all are the victims of those strayed minds,

Who were blackened by the vitriol of all kinds.
Ever since our dolorous spirits have haunted this place,
With a determined vow, never to sit in solace;
Till this venom is gone and opens the way,
For the saner sense to have its final say.
This day our apparitions are clad in virgin white,
You enjoy the bliss of this enthralling site.
The resurgent ties between the brothers of past,
Their myopic vision now growing so vast;
Have quelled our turmoil and ended our grief,
For us your journey is a source of desired relief.
Across your travels, make our message all pervasive,
' Virtues dawn on those who are not evasive.'
Those whose verve can make them rein in time,
Are acclaimed in the annals with every rhythm and rhyme.
This eternal verity, you go on singing like song,
"The walls between brothers can endure, not for long."

robot has been developed to use the same types of expressive and
behavioural cues that babies use to learn to interact socially and
emotionally with others.

University of Hertfordshire researcher Dr Lola Canamero with Nao, a robot that can show its emotions and form a bond with humans

It is able to detect human emotions by studying body-language and
facial expressions and becomes better at reading someone's mood over
time as it grows to 'know' the person. It is also able to remember its interactions with different people and memorise their faces. Nao
have been created through modelling the early attachment process that
human and chimpanzee infants undergo when they are very young. It
forms part of a European project called FEELIX Growing, that is being
led by Lola Canamero, a computer scientis at the University of
Hertfordshire.'This behaviour is modelled on what a young child
does,' said Dr Cañamero. 'This is also very similar to the way
chimpanzees and other non-human primates develop affective bonds with
their caregivers.'Nao is programmed to become particularly
attached to an individual who interacts with the robot in a certain way
that helps it to learn. It is capable of expressing anger, fear,
sadness, happiness, excitement and pride and will get upset if the
human fails to comfort it or when confronted by a stressful situation
that they cannot cope with.

This is the amazing moment a
scientist got just a little too close to a shark he was trying to
photograph - and the deadly predator attempted to eat his camera.Marine
biologist Michael Scholl was documenting great white sharks off Dyer
Island in South Africa when the hair-raising incident happened.Scholl
is part of an international team of scientists is building an
extraordinary new computer system that can identify every single member
of one of the world's most feared predators - the Great White Shark.
Led by a British university, the system could lead to tourists helping international shark experts to track the animals. The
University of Bristol is developing software that will automatically
recognize individual dorsal fins of animals swimming in the world's
oceans.

A great white shark bites Michael's camera as he tried to photograph it
for his finprinting project in the sea off Dyer Island, South Africa

Unique: A new computer system will allow
scientists to track individual Great White sharks by automatically
recognising their fins.

The Cave Divers

British cave diver Martyn Farr to join a team attempting a record for the longest ever cave penetration

British cave diving instructor and photographer Martyn Farr has travelled the
world, exploring some of the world's most spectacular underwater caves. He
will join a team next month as they attempt to set a world record for the
longest ever cave penetration.

Three divers are pictured as they are about to enter the impressive
entrance of Carwash Cenote in 2000, near Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Jenny
Pinder swims through the tight underwater passages of the Grotta Giusti
Cave in Tuscany, Italy. A far cry from the biting chill of British
underwater caves, this 'spa cave' boasts waters at a balmy 35 degrees
Celsius

Mimoso Cave, in the Matto Grosso du Sul, Brazil

entrance to the popular Gran Cenote Cave, near Tulum

Helen Rider swimming into a coral cave at 30m depth, off-shore from Hurghada in the Egyptian Red Sea

Helen
Rider demonstrates buoyancy control and positioning in this clear
underwater tunnel at Dinas Rock Silica Mine, in Neath
Valley, South Wales

These
photographs were taken by Martyn Farr - Britain's only cave-diving
instructor and the country's best cave-diving photographer. Martyn
[pictured above], from Crickhowell, Powys, Wales, will join an
international team next month for a world record attempt - the longest
ever cave penetration. Martyn will attempt to capture the team - made
up of world's best cave divers - as they penetrate deeper into Pozo
Azul cave, near Burgos, Spain, than has every been achieved before

Several
sites around the UK, including Somerset, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and
Sutherland in Scotland offer cave diving, and Martyn has dived some of
the world's most spectacular locations. Included in his collection of
photos is the Weebubbie Cave in the remote Nullarbor Plain of Western
Australia - thought to be the world's largest underwater tunnel

British
cave diving is notoriously dangerous, but Martyn feels learning here
can only produce better and safer divers. He said: "Once you can cave
dive here you can cave dive anywhere in the world. The systems here are
narrow, it's cold and the visibility can be very poor as we have a lot
of silt. When silt is disturbed you end up swimming inside a murky
cloud and you can lose all sense of direction. All you've got to get
you safely out is your guide-line leading you back to the entrance. If
people come to me and they can cope here in the Brecon Beacons then
they know they can go anywhere"

Although
this potentially fatal sport usually requires teams to move equipment
and bring safety in numbers, Martyn often ventures below the surface
completely solo. He said: "When I am exploratory diving in systems that
have not been dived before, I actually prefer being on my own.

Pakistan's independence day (also known as Yom-e-Istiqlal (Urdu: یوم استقلال
)) is observed on 14 August, the day before Pakistan was made an
independent country based on border lines created by the British during
the end of their rule of India. Pakistan became an independent country
in 1947. The day is a national holiday
in Pakistan. The day is celebrated all over the country with flag
raising ceremonies, tributes to the national heroes and fireworks
taking place in the capital, Islamabad. The main celebrations takes place in Islamabad, where the President and Prime Minister
raise the national flag at the Presidential and Parliament buildings
and deliver speeches that are televised live. In the speech, the
leaders highlight the achievements of the government, goals set for the
future and in the words of the father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam, bring "Unity, Faith and Discipline" to its people.

Independence of Pakistan was officially announced on Thursday, August 15, 1947 at 12:00 a.m. but the ceremony itself took place half an hour early on the actual day.[citation needed]
This day is celebrated 1 day earlier in comparison to India even though
the independence granted by the British Raj to both countries at
midnight on 15 August 1947.

14 August is a National holiday of Pakistan.
In the capital Islamabad and in all major cities of Pakistan the
Government Offices are lit up as well as all the larger skyscrapers.
Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place in all the
provincial capitals. In the cities around the country the Flag Hoisting
Ceremony is done by the Nazim (Mayor) belonging to that constituency.
In various private organisations the Flag Hoisting Ceremony is carried
out by a Senior officer of that organisation. Schools and colleges
around the country organise flag hoisting ceremony and various cultural
activities within their respective premises. Families and friends get
together for lunch or dinner, or for an outing. Housing colonies,
cultural centres, and societies hold entertainment programmes and
competitions.
Other events include: Changing of the guard at the mausoleum of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Mazar-e-Quaid, Wagah Border ceremonies, fashion and musical concerts, both sides releasing prisoners that may have crossed each others borders.

The Minar-e-Pakistan fully lit to commemorate the independence of Pakistan from the British Empire

The
change of guard ceremony takes place at various monuments throughout the country. Here the Pakistan Navy cadets salute the tomb of the father of the nation, Mohammed Ali Jinnah

Students lighting candles at midnight to bring luck and hope for the future.
