On Ramzan, Fasting and Ganesha Idols - Editorial

Posted by: "Rahul" bruntno1@yahoo.com   bruntno1

Sun Aug 22, 2010 2:14 am (PDT)

Good day Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Its Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Ramzan has started and the preparations are underway to herald the
arrival of the Elephant headed God into Hindu households in
about 2 weeks...

The lunar cycle followed by most ancient religions to mark festivals
and change of seasons for various activities, last year brought Ramzan
to coincide with the birth celebrations of one of the most iconic
of Hindu deities who is also one of the highly venerated ones
throughout India irrespective of regional affiliations ...

Ganesha has a special significance in Hindu thought in that
He is invoked and worshipped before the start of any new work
to ward off evil afflictions and obstacles ...

Known as the Lord of ganas,
He controls the demons of Shiva and leads them ...

Being Lord over them, His writ runs large in setting them
free or restraining them ... Interestingly, by one version,
Ganesha was initially and esoterically also known as
Vighnakarta (creator of obstacles) rather than
Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles ) as He is now
worshipped

The whole elephant headed torso of Ganesha carries with it
a significance that is metaphorical and thus possibly
the reason why its never played out loud or
ingrained in our Lives .. takes a lot of work ...

But then, that is the fate that most religious celebrations
are getting relegated to ....

Ramzan, a month dedicated to fasting inorder to attain
proximity to Divine gets reduced to remaining hungry
throughout the day and feasting and partying at night

The Hindu month of Shravan is preceded by a New moon
known in Maharashtra as "Gatari" Amavas when heavy
boozing takes place before the period of abstinence begins ...

Its almost as if the fasting or abstinence is a chore ...
A chore with such strong religious connotations that one dare not
mess with it nor change its popular form as it is observed ...

Why do we fast ?? and what is the significance of a fast ??
Is it merely cleansing our physiological insides and in the
process enhancing the flavour of food that we get to eat ...

Well, YES .. but that is a minor goal or rather a pleasant side effect ..

I once had an occasion to listen to a priest
explain to me the significance of a fast ...

The Hindu word for a fast is "Upvaas"
The priest explained that it consisted of two root words ..
Up = meaning/referring to above or Sky ward or symbolically Divinity
and Vaas = meaning taking up residence ...

Upavaas thus meant taking up residence near the Divine

Abstaining from food meant that the body was rested
from its regular processes and thus remained calm ....
The mind no longer concerned with what to eat and how to
indulge in pleasurable sensations coul also be brought to focus
on matters of the spirit ...

And believe me, I can say this from my own experience,
that the days on which one fasts or eats little,
there is a definite improvement in physical cognition
and improved concentration and alertness ....

And if one were earnestly focussed on the Divine,
the concentration is singular and uninterrupted ...
And once you attain this singlemindedness,
everything else loses focus ...

Like the Sun's rays, you cut through the wool of
ignorance and enter into enlightenment

Yes, its that simple ...

The catch ??

You have got to want it bad ...

Bad enough to put in the effort,
Bad enough to stick with the effort
and
Bad enough to make the requisite sacrifices

Probably the reason why the ostentatious
show of celebration at the end still leaves us
unsatisfied and wanting more ......

So that we celebrate it year after year ..
going through the paces, the motions that become habit

Habit which enslaves us ....  and keeps us that way
by throwing little bits of carrots of peace that keep
the flame of possible attainment of heaven alive in us ....
like an addiction ..... at whose altar we serve
like loyal slaves in the hope that it'll someday set us free ...

The Ganesha idols will be immersed into the sea after 10 days ..
The idol of fasting in Ramzan out of habit will be sacrificed on EID

But, when will we sacrifice the idol
of dead habit that seperates us
from our Divine birthright

Poori RAMAYAN biwiyon ki kahani hai...

Laxman apni biwi ghar pe chhodkar chala aya.

Rawan doosre ki utha ke fas gaya.

Hanuman ki apni thi hi nahi magar doosre ki dhundhne mein Lanka jala dali.

Ram ko apni wapas laane ke liye 10 din tak war karni Padi.Wapas Lake

bhi kya mila?

Ek dhobi ne apni biwi ko wapas ghar mein nahin liya,to Ram ne apniwali
ko out kar diya.

Aur end mein kya hua?

Jis biwi ke karan itni badi ramayan hui wo to underground chali gayi!

Abhi socho,itna jhamela hua kayko?

Kyun ki Dashrath ki 3 biwiyan thi!

Hold My Hand

Posted by: "Love-Distributor" pkpuneetpk@yahoo.com   pkpuneetpk

Sun Aug 22, 2010 2:39 am (PDT)

Little girl and her
father were crossing a bridge.

The father was kind of scared so he asked his little daughter,

"Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don't fall into the
river."

The little girl said, "No, Dad. You hold my hand."

"What's the difference?" Asked the puzzled father.

"There's a big difference," replied the little girl.

"If I hold your
hand and something happens to me,

chances are that I may let your hand go.

But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens,

you will never let my hand go."

In any relationship, the essence of trust is
not in its bind, but in its bond.

So hold the hand of the person who loves you
rather than expecting them to hold

yours...

This message is too short... but carries a lot
of Feelings

With Love

Spirit in the sky: The mysterious photo that shows 'something' looming over suburban Surrey

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 3:45 PM on 21st August 2010

Perhaps it is just a few wisps of
cloud blown together.
But even cynics would have to
admit that this apparition floating
in a vivid blue sky has the look of a
ghostly angel.
It was photographed
by Christine Snowdon, 61, who says
she has been seeing angels since
she was four.

Spooky: Ghost? Angel? Vapour trail? As a
lifelong believer in angels, Christine Snowdon was in no doubt when she
snapped this extraordinary image

The legal secretary
spotted the cloud at Carshalton
Beeches, Surrey.
‘I quickly ran indoors and
grabbed my camera as the angels
were sinking down behind the
houses,’ she said.

Miss Snowdon, a
mother of two, added: ‘This proves
to everyone, even those who don’t
believe, that angels exist.’

Christine Snowdon sees angels everywhere, every day: She has even written a book detailing how to get in touch with spirits.

A Monkey Mother's Love

Busy day for a monkey who saves her cub from being hit by a moped...and then again from becoming a dog's dinner

By Paul Thompson

Last updated at 5:56 PM on 21st August 2010

Even on the dusty and dangerous streets of New Delhi, the bond between a mother monkey and her young is almost unbreakable. This
tiny youngster was struck by a moped while scampering across the road
in India's capital, where the animals are a common sight scavenging for
food.

Lurking nearby was a wild dog
who sensed an easy kill. But just when the baby's fate seem sealed, its
mother leapt to the rescue.

Dedicated mother: Monkey cub was first run over by a moped before being attacked by a dog

The mother stepped in to attack the moped driver before gunning for the hungry dog too

In an
act of ferocious devotion she grappled with the dog, biting it on its
back to drive it away before picking up her little one.

In the animal kingdom the bond between a mother and her young is unbreakable.

And as this young Indian monkey discovered that natural instinct is always evident, even away from their natural surroundings.
The small golden haired monkey was left momentarily dazed after being struck by a moped rider while scampering across the road.

Monkey see monkey do: The mother attacking the dog after it has started on her cub

Lurking nearby was a wild dog who, sensing an easy kill, moved in to try and snatch his prey as he lay stunned on the ground.
But just when the young monkey’s fate seem sealed its mother leapt to the rescue.
Using her powerful arms she jumped on to the back of the street predator in a desperate act of protection.
Amazed onlookers in the streets of New Delhi, India, watched as the monkey and the dog tussled together.

Mother scares the dog off and tends to her cub who cowers beneath her in fear after the ordeal

Eventually the dog realised he was not going to win  and wandered away leaving the injured baby monkey to cling to its mother. The
scenes were captured by a photographer who happened to be passing at
the time of the incident and posted the pictures to an internet photo
site.The species of
primate, known as the Common Indian monkey, are a common sight in the
streets of New Delhi where they scavenge for food.
Like other animals forced into an urban environment they run the risk of being hit in the traffic choked streets.

A Rainbow Like Buddha's Halo

Rare Buddha's Halo appears over mountain in China

By Mail Foreign Service

Last updated at 2:45 PM on 20th August 2010

It may be the rarest of all rainbows, only appearing when sunlight, cloud or fog, and the observers are all in a line.So to capture the appearance of this Buddha's Halo on film is indeed a near-miracle.

Seeing things: A 'Buddha Halo' appears after rain on Huang Mountain in Huangshan, Anhui province of China today

How it works: The phenomenon is formed by the
diffuse reflection and diffraction of sunlight irradiating the clouds'
surfaces. In other words, it is a bright rainbow after the rain

A Buddha is depicted with a halo

The phenomenon appeared over the Huang Mountain in Huangshan, Anhui province of China after rain today.
Buddha is often depicted with a halo around his head.

The rainbow is a natural phenomenon
of atmospheric optics. It is formed by the diffuse reflection and
diffraction of sunlight irradiating the surface of the cloud.
The halo, a ring of light
surrounding a person, is used in religious iconography to depict the
holiness or sacredness of the figure.
It is widely used in Buddhism, appearing in relics dating back to the first century.
